British Royals Attend Church at Sandringham

Members of the British Royal Family attended church this morning at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene near the Sandringham Estate, joining the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh who regularly attend when they are in residence. For this outing, the Queen repeated her cream and gold split crown hat with black and gold feather trim (see a better view here). The wonderful texture of this piece has made it a reader favourite and and judging by the number of times she has worn it, Queen Elizabeth clearly agrees.

The Duchess of Cambridge repeated her black felt beret cocktail hat trimmed with felt leaves and chrysanthemum blooms. While Kate has worn this hat with a number of different outfits, I think its pairing today with her burgundy checked suit and tall black boots was one of its more successful outings.

The Countess of Wessex has had another stellar year of hats and her choice today therefore, was a little surprising. She repeated her burgundy felt stovepipe hat with sharply indented crown and flying knotted side sash trim. The colour is wonderfully festive (and looks beautiful against her winter white Armani coat) but the shape feels dated and awkward. I do like to see hats worn multiple times but would prefer this particularly one move into retirement. Lady Louise, in contrast, looked lovely in her classic beret.

Princess Anne repeated her red felt oversize beret trimmed in a navy-edged feather. It is a festive piece that belies its age (at least 27 years old) that Anne wears well.

Princess Beatrice repeated the black velvet beaded bumper brimmed hat she wore on Christmas Day. We don’t usually see her repeat hats so close together but as this one is a beauty, it’s not surprising to see it on the young princess again.

The stand out hat for me today was cocktail hat worn by Zara Phillips Tindall. In red felt, the beret base of the hat was trimmed with an upright knotted sash and curling feathers. With her checked black and white coat, the hat provided wonderful contrast and punch of vibrant colour.

Phillips Family at Gatcombe Trials

The family of Zara Phillips were out to cheer her on this weekend at the Whatley Manor International Horse Trials held at Gatcombe Park, her mother’s country estate. On Friday, Princess Anne, in a casual canvas bucket hat, took to the course with her two elder granddaughters, Savannah and Isla.

On Saturday, Princess Anne donned a tweed newsboy cap to show youngest granddaughter, 20 month old Mia Tindall, around the event. While a little bulbous, I think this is a great country hat for this hands-on royal grandmother.

This event was one on Zara Phillips’ road to the 2016 Rio Olympics and the talented equestrienne looked focused and confident on the course.

British Royals Enjoy Eventing Festival

The annual Festival of British Eventing was held this weekend on the grounds of Gatcombe Park, Princess Anne’s country home in Gloucestershire. The equestrian event was attended by the Phillips and Wessex families who wore a bevy of sporty hats. It looks like a marvellous time was had by all.
