Yesterday, we looked at some of the many hats Queen Beatrix wore as Princess and during the first 10 years of her reign. In continued celebration of her 75th Birthday, we’ll now turn our focus to the hats she has worn over the past 23 years as Queen. In looking over all these hats, there are a number that elicit giggles and/or doubletakes. I’m calling these the funny hats not because they are odd (although some of them are!) but because to a hat lover like me, they are so very amusing. Here are some of Queen Beatrix’s funny hats!
The Single Tier “Hat-Cakes” (AKA the Giant Pillboxes): Large round cake shape pillbox, often worn straight on the head, slightly over the forehead

The Multi-Tiered Cakes: Like the round cakes but with upturned bumper brims that take the cake shape to multiple levels

The Bird’s Nests: The name says it all.

The Mini Brim: Round crowned hat (variations include flared and domed shapes) with an awkward mini-brim.

The Hourglasses: a spool shape that creates double brims going off in opposite directions.

The Loop-de-Loops: Some queens have bows or feathers on the sides of their hats. Queen Beatrix often has loops.

The Pyramids: And last, but by no means least, there are the pointy hats.

Not everyone is able to carry off these unique and unusual shapes. Which one would you actually wear?!
I’ll be back on Monday with the third and final installment in this series- the Queenly Hats.

Those pointed hats look very odd and not very flattering. I’m kind of surprised how many there are.
Yikes. There’s not one single hat here I’d be caught dead in! I guess for a queen, it’s different. The feathered ones are really awful but in a way, I kind of like them on Beatrix. The pyramid ones have got to go. Ugh.
I totally agree. There’s something that makes those feathered hats work (albeit, in an odd way!) on Beatrix. I remember first seeing her in that huge teal feathered hat at Friso and Mabel’s wedding and wondering what in heaven’s name she was thinking… but in an odd way, she carries it off. I hope that this bold streak will continue once she returns to being Princess Beatrix again in a few months.
