Birthday of Queen Máxima

Queen Máxima of the Netherlands (née Máxima Zorreguieta Cerruti) celebrates her 42nd birthday today. Máxima’s hat style (reviewed here and here) is varied with lots of large brims and bright colours. One of my favourite hats she has worn, however, was a neutral straw smaller hat by Fabienne Delvigne. If it sounds boring it’s not- with white roses and huge curling tails, it is a very striking and dramatic hat. Maxima wore this first in May 2009 when she attended military awards at The Hague, and repeated it (as shown here) in April 2011 on a visit to Berlin. As we celebrate this young queen’s birthday today I can’t help wondering which one of the many hats she has worn is your favourite?

Norwegian Royals Celebrate National Day

The Norwegian Royal Family celebrated their country’s National Day today in Oslo and London. King Harald, Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit and their children watched the annual National Day parade from the balcony of The Royal Palace in Oslo this afternoon. I just love how the King and Crown Prince turned up in dapper silk top hats for the parade.

Queen Sonja repeated the red wool hat with crazy curved brim she wore in December 2011 for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. It reminds me of the red Susanne Juul hat that Princess Benedikte has worn several times. I can’t make up my mind about this hat – it’s both interesting and a little odd. I love that Queen Sonja is brave enough to wear it.

Mette-Marit wore the same eggplant purple Mona Strand designed felt calot she wore to the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony in December 2012 and for the Finnish State Visit in October 2012. I still don’t like how this hat perches on the back of her head but I’m less offended by it the more times I see it. It’s a great colour on her. And Prince Haakon in a top hat? There are no words for how handsome that man is.

Over in London, Princess Martha-Louise attended Norwegian National Day events with her family, all dressed in traditional costume. She looks very festive, doesn’t she?

It looks like a lovely day was had by all. Which of these hats was your favourite today?

Duke of Edinburgh Presents Service Medals

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, presented the Afghanistan Operational Service Medals Parade to forty Commando Royal Marines at Norton Manor Camp in Taunton yesterday. As Captain General Royal Marines, he wore the combat uniform and beret of this rank. He looks quite handsome in uniform at age 92, doesn’t he?

Princess Clothilde at Cannes

Princess Clotilde of Savoy, the Princess of Venice & Piedmont, attended the premiere of “The Great Gatsby” today at the opening of the Cannes Film Festival. She accessorized her amazing Elie Saab gown with a bejeweled fasincator headband. While most starlets choose sparkly earrings, I love that Clothilde eschewed jewellery in favour of a fascinator. That’s a girl after my own heart!

What do you think of this fascinator? Should she have chosen diamond earrings instead?

Queen Recognizes Recipients of the Order of Merit

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles attended a service for members of the Order of Merit at the Chapel Royal, at St. James’ Palace yesterday (Charles is greeting his mother in the awkward photo below). The Queen repeated a mint green straw hat with feather trim designed by Rachel Trevor Morgan. Paired with an elegantly simple coat dress, I thought this was a fantastic look for her. What do you think of the Queen in this minty fresh hat?
