Belgian King and Queen in Eupean

The Belgium inauguration tour of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde continued yesterday with a visit to the city of Eupen. Mathilde wore another new brimless hat- a ruched and folded calot. While these photos are not the greatest, this hat is falling flat for me. I think it’s the way it’s perched so precariously on the back of Mathilde’s head. I understand the convenience of a brimless hat but this one looks awkward from what we can see here. What I did like, however, was the combination of fuchsia coat with navy skirt and neutral hat. Mathilde tends to match her accessories to the same shade of her clothing and it was nice to see her mix it up a little.

  1. From the front, this hat frames Queen Mathilde’s face in a very pretty way. It’s just from the side that I don’t like it as much. Her coat is really pretty tho! She looks so good in bright pink.

  2. I am going to bat for this hat. I want to say up front that the color is hard to judge, but the photos (here and elsewhere) are distorting all the colors, I think. That coat is throwing off the color balance in the pictures (look how pink all the men are!). That said, this hat is wonderful. It has very pretty movement, and it has a soft dimensionality that is so interesting and even luxurious. It is subtle, which hats often are not, but that’s what is great about it. It’s the opposite of a statement hat, but it has a lot to say.

      • Just to clarify – the color point was not aimed at this blog! I saw the same thing at other sites (where I looked to see if I could get a better view of this hat). The same thing happened with pictures of the red coat and open-crown hat pics from the other day. Maybe its her!

  3. She is a very beautiful lady and I like everything except the hat *sigh*…oh well at least she is wearing a hat. (Even though I think the hat looks like a dish towel has been pinned on her hair.)

  4. I agree the hat is way too far back. She must have it anchored pretty good to be perched on the back of her head like that. Plus it doesn’t seem to match her outfit. If it had been a solid neutral color that would have been okay with her outfit, but it seems to be a plaid or diagonal striped. Since it isn’t a solid color, then it should have had a color in the hat to match the outfit just in my opinion. I just love this royal couple though as they are always touching each other. They are so cute as a couple.

    • It does look like a bit of an afterthought. I don’t quite understand how it goes with a pink suit and navy skirt…. it looks disjointed to me.

  5. I think she looks very pretty. I can understand how these hats off the face so people you are visiting can still see you are important.

  6. I think we have seen this “falling off the back of her head” look before – can’t remember where. It really makes you wonder if she uses Crazy Glue. Ouch! No, it’s not a favourite of mine either.

  7. I am thinking she wore this one not too long ago or maybe you showed us this when you were reviewing turbans? Either way, agree with you – not a fav of mine – it’s flat and dull.

  8. Oh dear, this is bad, really bad. This looks like a dirty dish rag on her head. The color, the style and the way it sits on her head, horrible. Sorry!
