Hat Types: The Calot

Calot | Royal Hats

After our recent looks at the brimless turban and pillbox hats, today we look at the calot.

History: The calot (which means ‘cap’ in French) design harks back to a popular hat in the 16th century known as the ‘Juliet cap’. 500 years ago, Juliet caps were usually an open-work woven cap, often decorated with pearls, beads or jewels. The calot style came back into fashion in the 1920s and again in the 1970s, when it then became de rigueur with bohemian brides. While calots have mostly been worn with evening gowns or wedding dresses, they are also occasionally worn by royals as a daytime hat.

Characteristics: A close-fitting cap that sits off the face with no visor or brim. A calot is distinguished by its rounded crown that follows the contour of the wearer’s head.

Royals Associated with this Hat Style: The iconic Princess Grace of Monaco on her wedding day. It is a go-to shape or Queen Silvia and Queen Máxima has embraced the shape in recent years as well.

While the calots are great for royal walkabouts or events when a royal face needs to be clearly visible, I sometimes find this style of hat falls a little flat. Like the pillbox, I think placement is key- it works when it is not too far back (from the hats above, I think Máxima and Mary got it just right). What do you think of the calot hat?

Birthday of Princess Tessy

Royal Hats Princess Tessy of Luxembourg (née Tessy Antony) celebrates her 28th birthday today. We don’t see much of her (she, her husband Prince Louis and their two young sons live in London where Tessy and Louis are students) except for the most major Luxembourg royal events. Despite her limited time in the spotlight, Tessy is memorable to us millinery fans for her fantastic hats. For National Day in 2011, she wore this turquoise party on her head. To celebrate her birthday, I couldn’t resist taking another peek.

Japanese Empress Visits Hospital and Museum

Empress Michiko of Japan had a busy weekend of  health care related engagements. On Saturday, she and Emperor Akihito visited with leprosy patients in the Kikuchi Keifuen Sanatorium. For this visit, Michiko repeated the same petite pale grey saucer hat with bow and navy ribbons we saw her wear last month.

On Sunday, the Imperial couple visited the Minamata Disease Municipal Museum and Monument honoring all those who suffered Minamata disease (a neurological disorder discovered in the 1950s. It was caused by mercury poisoning from a chemical plant near the city of Minamata). Empress Michiko wore what looks like a new hat (although I do have significant trouble keeping all of her grey saucer hats apart). This hat was another petite saucer, this time in a darker charcoal grey and trimmed with a unique black and white origami bow,

Last time we saw the Empress, a number of you asked if there was a reason behind her grey wardrobe. Michiko occasionally wears green, peach, lilac, yellow, blue, dark blue, and even red (gasp!) but even these pops of colour seem to be sparingly inserted in between much grey and cream. I have a hunch the colour choices simply reflect the very conservative nature of the Japanese royal establishment but that is just conjecture on my part. Can anyone else offer some insight?

Friday Housekeeping

A few loose ends to tie up from this week: Several of you commented about the suit Queen Elizabeth wore on Tuesday. While the hat does appear to be new, the suit was worn back in June 2005 with a hat designed by Frederick Fox. Thanks to reader Lex for spotting this! And no- I’m not going to feature this pair in a “This or That” showdown. Somehow, I don’t think it’s a fair match!

While 99% of the comments on this blog are just wonderful (and absolutely make my day!), I was forced to post a Commenting Policy this week. You might notice that two readers who commented here frequently are suddenly not here any more…. and that makes me quite disappointed.  The commenting policy truly does not apply to most of you, dear readers, but it is now there for reference.

And finally, Maria EF Milliner /Tocados interviewed me earlier this week for her blog. Some of you have asked me about the origin of my love for hats, my favourite royal hat wearer and my favourite style of hat. For those of you who are still curious about such things, some of these questions were answered in the interview.

Have a wonderful weekend, fellow hat lovers!

Belgian Inauguration Tour In Bruges

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde continued their inauguration tour to the city of Bruges today. She unveiled another new hat, this one a straw toque woven in a grey and beige plaid pattern. As turbans go, this one was fine; I liked the way it tied her oatmeal jacket (gorgeous!) and charcoal grey skirt together. On it’s own, I don’t think I would like this hat but with the whole outfit, it worked very well. What do you think?
