Duchess of Alba Celebrates a Spanish Wedding

Last Friday, October 11, The Duchess of Alba was spotted at the Spanish celebrity wedding of Maria Colonques and Andres Benet. Cayetana topped off her very festive boysenberry-hued ensemble with a purple flowered cocktail hat. Doesn’t she look great?! I admire her fashion confidence and can only hope that when I am her age (a sprightly 87 years old) I have as much fun with my millinery and clothing choices as she does.

Belgian Royal Couple Visit Ghent

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde continued their domestic inaugural tour with a visit to Ghent today. Mathilde debuted another new hat, this one a ruched casque trimmed in stylized pleated fabric swirls (or flowers?!) and a cream net veil.

I’m not usually a fan of these helmet-style hats but this one suits Mathilde very well and the detail on it is quite interesting. I wonder if it might work even better with the swirls rotated down closer to her ear?

Designer: Fabienne Delvigne. She describes it as “a green banana fiber hat with a bronze color veil”.

What do you think of this new hat?

Queen Máxima Opens Innovation Centre

Queen Máxima of the Netherlands attended the opening of the FrieslandCampina Innovation Centre in Wageningen today. She repeated the charcoal grey hat with upturned brim she wore to Prince Jaime’s wedding earlier this month.

I really like this hat- the wool velvet looks so luxurious and the proportion is really wonderful on Máxima. Today, however, she paired it with a grey coat and dress and the overall ensemble was a little too monochrome for my liking. What do you think of this outfit with this hat?

Empress Michiko Supports Disabled Swimmers

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan attended a swimming competition yesterday as part of the 13th National Sports Festival for People with Disabilities. The empress must have heard your recent compliments about her grey hat (a slightly larger hat than she usually wears) as she wore a similarly sized hat in cream with slate blue trim. We’re used to seeing her in teeny tiny saucer hats; I think this larger sized saucer hat suits her very well.

I have always loved the ice blue mushroom-shaped picture hat she wore to the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Asturias in May 2004 shown above. What others stand out to you here?
