Queen Máxima attended the Prix de Rome awards this morning and debuted a new hat! It is one of the more unique hats we have seen on Máxima (for those of us who know Máxima’s millinery, that’s saying something). This hat is a variation of a calot in light tan wool with curled ribbons and a mass of feathers on top. The hat also has a fold of wool that forms a pointed flap at the front. It’s so unusual and different what what we have seen Máxima wear before that I’m still making my mind up about it. What do you think of this millinery showpiece?!
Update: stevesteef commented that this hat represents a bird. I found another photo and indeed- it does!
Second Update: photos from the second time Queen Máxima wore this hat show the bird sculpture (made of feathers!) more clearly.

A real bird-look, very clever indeed.
As my grandmother would say… “That’s a lot of look.” But she pulls it off, and I kinda like it. The shape is really flattering for her.
Well, that is everything but the kitchen sink thrown together. Cleaned out all the extra bits and bobs out of the workroom. Maybe now they can start new and come up with something creative and attractive.
I like it. Looks wonderful.
Crikey. Robin Hood indeed.
I LOVE THIS! Wholeheartedly and unreservedly! Did I mention that I love it?
This would work for me if the feathers were removed.
Only Max could make this work! I go back and forth thinking it’s a hot mess and thinking it’s kind cool.
I just saw somewhere that it represents a bird, with its head and beak in the front.
I like the view from the back and I love her hair, but I do not care for the front view. I don’t like the pointed flap and the mass of feathers reminds me of a dead bird. BUT somehow she makes it work! It is not to my taste, but she looks good in it.
It looks as if the millner threw every spare ribbon and feather they had in the room on this hat. A bit too much for me and I don’t think the shape or color is flattering.
When I took a first, quick glance at the front view on the right, I thought that the orange umbrella in the background was part of the hat. So just the spare ribbons and feathers from the milliner don’t seem all that bad.
Actually, I find the color rather interesting and unexpected.
It’s more like going on a hunting trip.
Agree with all the comments, yes Robin Hood has had his hat stolen and it now sits on Queen Max’s head with all the trimmings from the forest and the birds, lolololo. She sure is creative, the only thing is, why show your roots my dear? That fake hair piece does you no justice at all.
The fake ponytail is awful. The hat is super cute!
That is some wonderful goofiness. It’s good to be the queen.
Yep; Robin Hood!
On most this would be too ‘Robin Hood’ looking – but the color and on Max, it works in my book.
It works but it is still very “Robin Hood”!
Fabulous!!!
Ditto: I love the hat & the way it coordinates with her outfit:)
That is a striking hat, very interesting. The color works very well on her too.
I like it! Yes, this is one busy hat, but with her pulled-back hair and simple suit, Maxima pulls it off.
That hat reminds me of Errol Flynn in Robin Hood.
