Queen Máxima Presents A Cultural Award

After her quick trip to Russia, Queen Máxima was back in Amsterdam yesterday to preside over the 2013 Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Prijs. She choose this event to showcase a new hat, another wool felt hat with sharply raised front brim. I like this hat shape but to be honest, I’m ready for a change. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I am missing Máxima’s toques!

This hat was trimmed with a wide grosgrain ribbon around the crown and had a lovely, subtle wave on one side of the brim. The colour, a sublimely rich aubergine, was particularly beautiful on Máxima. I’m just not sure that the colour-blocked purple hat and teal dress (with very unattractive peplum) was a good combination. What do you think of this new grape hat? And, what do you think about seeing this style of hat on this queen, again?

  1. I was ready to dismiss the entire look, but then I looked at the pictures again and blocked the peplum from my view with my finger and found that I would have loved it WITHOUT that hideous peplum. I also think the hat would have looked better with a different hairstyle. This style of hat looks good on her, but I do think she needs to wear other styles as well.

  2. I like the hat. it seems to me her clothes are all on the small side for her, so the peplum hides the too tight skirts that have the pull wrinkles across them. but the colors work on her very well. When she has her hair controlled she looks fantastic.

    • I totally agree on the peplum’s utility. Btw, while we are talking tight fitting clothes… is it me or can we distinguish a royal nipple through the fabric? (first picture)

  3. I don’t mind seeing her in this style of hat again and the purple does look so good on her. I don’t like the dress. It looks like she is wearing a big apron.

  4. I like the color blocking, especially as her jewellery and shoes tie the whole outfit together. I love how her statements in this outfit are her hat and her shoes!

  5. Maxima looks wonderful in wide brimmed hats IMHO, and this colour is surprisingly flattering for her. I am not a lover of the teal colour, but don’t mind the aubergine teamed with it. The peplum is not the most flattering line for her.

  6. I like the two colours together, also the shape of the hat. The peplum is not the most flaterring on her, but as always, her smile takes the show.

  7. Yes, yes, yes, the hat is darn gorgeous, the color on her is great, the style is perfect and I find I really like the entire outfit. She pulled it together with the way she incorporated he color of her jewelry, her shoes to match the hat with the teal dress. I love the style of dress on her, this time the cut fits her, and with that huge pin, those earrings and the color block of the shoes, it really fits her. Way to go Queen Max, you look amazing!

  8. I’m also ready for a change. I prefer the hat and whole look as seen from pictures 2 & 3 perspective, otherwise it looks too plain with her ratty hair down.
