200th Anniversary of Empress Go-Sakuramachi

On Tuesday, the Imperial Religious Ceremonies commemorating the 200th anniversary of the death of Empress Go-Sakuramachi  (1740-1813) were held both in Tokyo and Kyoto (the Empress was the last female monarch in Japan). Princess Akiko  attended the ceremony held at the mausoleum of the Empress in Kyoto. She wore a simple black pillbox hat that I thought was befitting the somber occasion. I think, however, I would have preferred it worn a little further back on her head.

Christmas Eve with the Norwegian Royals

The Norwegian Royal Family were decidedly less formal with their Christmas millinery choices than their British royal cousins. On Christmas Eve, Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Princess Ingrid both turned up to church in warm knitted hats. I suspect these hats were chosen more for function than for appearance… but I think a woolen beret or cloche would have been preferable, especially paired with their lovely dress coats.

Christmas Day with the Phillips, Linley and Chatto Families

Concluding our look at the British royal hats seen at Sandringham yesterday for Christmas, we have hats worn by the ladies in the Phillips, Linley and Chatto families. I’m afraid photos of these hats are very sparse- as soon as better ones are released (if indeed that happens), I will update these ones.

It is said that good things happen in threes… Princess Anne ended 2013 with her third hat unearthed from the early 1980s (here is the first hat, originally from 1981 and the second, originally from 1982). For Christmas yesterday, Princess Anne wore a lilac rounded pillbox hat I believe she originally wore for Queen Beatrix’s state visit to London in November 1982. The classic pillbox shape wears well, although the felt dot detail on the back of the veil feels a bit dated. Earlier in the day, Princess Anne was spotted in a brown fur hat, seen below on the right.

Zara Phillips Tindall, who is expecting her first child in January, looked striking in a new red cocktail hat. Trimmed with pheasant feathers and a double red wool bow, this hat fit with Zara’s penchant for avant garde millinery and still looked quite polished with her coordinating red coat. It was one of my favourite hats at Sandringham yesterday.

Princess Anne’s daughter in law, Autumn Phillips, wore a navy wool brimless oval hat with a pork pie style crown and bow loop trim on the side. It is a rather austere hat but paired with Autumn’s long blonde hair, the overall look was softened and she looked very smart.

Viscountess Linley and Lady Sarah Chatto also joined their royal relatives for Christmas at Sandringham. Lady Sarah wore a plain black hat we have seen on her numerous times before (see list of previous wearings below). What is most interesting about this hat is that its brim is pliable. Here, Lady Sarah has it folded up in front and down at the back (as she did for did for her mother, Princess Margaret’s funeral in 2002). We have also seen this hat’s brim rolled both down and rolled up all the way around. Lady Linley repeated the fuchsia feathered calot hat she wore to Ascot earlier this year. It remains one of my favourite hats of 2013.

So that concludes Christmas at Sandringham! If you had to pick one or two favourite hats, which ones would they be?

Christmas Day with the Yorks and Wessexes

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie continued the chic streak of millinery we have seen from them in 2013 with two more hats worn for church on Christmas Day yesterday. Princess Beatrice wore a new black wool flat percher-style hat trimmed with a large cornflower blue dahliah. This was one of my favourite hats today and I loved that the whimsical detail looked both elegantly polished and fun. I’m afraid I was much less a fan of Beatrice’s coat.

Princess Eugenie repeated her trusty black hard shell beret (the same hat she wore for Christmas last year) but trimmed it this year with a cheeky Christmas tree brooch.

The Countess of Wessex looked very chic in a new black cocktail hat, described by the designer as a “Metallic cocktail hat with felt knot design”. Paired with her fur scarf and winter white wool coat, the look was luxuriously glamorous and I thought Sophie looked fantastic.

Christmas Day With the Walses

The Queen was accompanied by her family to the Church of St. Mary Magdalene near the Sandringham Estate yesterday for Christmas Day service. As per tradition, the ladies were all in hats. The Duchess of Cornwall repeated a marine blue wool picture hat with tilted brim and square crown. I am really torn on this hat- on one hand, it is a beautiful shape and the colour is magnificent. But that unusual “rope” of coordinating wool felt wrapped around the crown looks like a giant sausage and I want so badly to remove it.

The Duchess of Cambridge unveiled a new hat, made by Gina Foster. This emerald green hard shell beret with large bow coordinated beautifully with her Alexander McQueen plaid coat. It’s a little cutesy but the whole look was very festive and I thought Kate looked great in green. What do you think of these two hats?
