Christmas Day with The Queen

The British Royal family accompanied Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh to church this morning at St. Mary Magdalene near the Sandringham Estate. Queen Elizabeth repeated her large black fur hat but paired it with a new burnt orange coat with coordinating black fur cuffs. The look is a little too Halloween-y for my taste and it does look like there is a cat curled up for a cosy nap on Her Majesty’s head… but in the spirit of Christmas, I’ll hold my tongue.

The Queen’s annual Christmas greeting speaks poignantly of reflection and features some never-before seen footage of the photo shoot following Prince George’s christening. You can watch it here. I’m going to take the rest of the day off to enjoy Christmas- we’ll look at the hats worn by other members of the British Royal Family tomorrow. Happy Christmas!

Japanese Emperor Celebrates 80th Birthday

The Imperial Royal Family celebrated Emperor Akihito’s 80th birthday yesterday with an appearance on the balcony of the Imperial Palace.

Crown Princess Masako repeated a pale blue Breton style hat with flat crown and rolled brim, made in the same monochrome printed silk as her tailored dress. It’s a demure hat that looks quite good on her, especially with her hair back in a lovely chignon as she was wearing it today.

Princess Kiko repeated her mint green pillbox hat. Her daughter, the Emperor’s oldest grandchild Princess Mako, wore a bumper hat with tightly upfolded brim (that, from the front, looks like a pillbox) in bright turquoise. I thought this hat, paired with her side swept hair and pearl jewelry, looked marvelously retro-chic on her. The vibrant colour made it my favourite of the day.

Queen Elizabeth at Sandringham

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh attended Sunday service at the church of St Mary Magdalene in Sandringham village. The Queen repeated a raspberry pink wool brimless hat with unique cross-over front detail. This hat goes all the way back to 2000; before we joke about Her Majesty digging deep into the Sandringham wardrobe, I think it’s important to say that I strongly suspect this hat was made by Frederick Fox. As this is the Queen’s first hatted public appearance since his death, it seems possible that she chose this particular hat today in honor of the milliner who served her for 44 years (especially since we have not seen this hat in almost 5 years). This is, however, all speculation on my part. Nevertheless, it’s a unique hat and the colour is marvelous on the Queen.
