Queen Beatrix in Toldijk

Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands attended the 100th anniversary of the Dutch Rural Youth Organization in Toldijk today. She wore one of her signature large brimmed hats;  this one had a stacked crown and side bow loop (see more of these side loop-de- looped hats here). The lovely upturned brim and the deep burgundy colour made this a stunning hat on her. It’s sad to think we only have two more months of official hat loveliness from Beatrix- no doubt we’ll see her in her retirement, but I’m afraid it will be with far fewer hats. Sigh.

Queen Beatrix in Arnhem

Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands attended the 150th anniversary of Bronbeek (part of the Dutch Ministry of Defense)  in Arnhem today. For this visit to the Royal Home for Old Soldiers and the Bronbeek Museum, she repeated this straw hat in warm shades of mocha brown (seen last month on her trip to Singapore). While I still prefer Beatrix in brighter coloured headgear, the jaunty diagonal upturned brim and soft ombre colour make this a stylish hat in my books. What do you think?

Queen Elizabeth Opens Hospital

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, opened the new Royal London Hospital in London today. After opening the hospital, they visited the The National Centre for Bowel Research and Surgical Innovation. The Queen wore a lilac pleated Angela Kelly designed hat and coat we’ve seen several times before (at Sandringham in early January and at three events last year). This hat just doesn’t do it for me- I find the crown shape is a little too Dr. Seuss while at the same time, the muted colour and the pleats are a little boring. The Queen obviously loves it since this is its fifth wearing in less than a year. So I ask you, dear hat fans- what do you think of this one?

Hat From the Past

A Flashback Thirty years ago today, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip toured a naval dockyard in San Diego during their visit to California. The Queen wore this nautically-themed suit and captain’s hat – an unusual hat shape for her. It’s a little too theme-y for me, although theme-y was pretty common in early 1980s fashion.  For some reason,  the whole ensemble reminds me of a Pearly Queen!
