Birthday of the Duchess of Cambridge (and Invitiation to a Hat Challenge)

Royal HatsThe Duchess of Cambridge celebrates her 32nd birthday today. Instead of looking back at one of her hats (as we did for all royal birthdays last year), let’s celebrate Kate’s birthday (and every royal birthday this year) with a look forward… to the future!

I challenge all of you, dear readers, to celebrate royal birthdays this year by giving each royal a hat! Not just any hat- a hat that you would like to see them wear. It might be a hat similar their current millinery style or it might be a complete departure.  You simply offer up a hat (a photo or a link to a hat) with a brief explanation of why you chose that hat for that royal. If you are a designer, show us which one of your hats you would suggest for that person!

We kick things off today with the Duchess of Cambridge. Kate often wears small percher hats in neutral colours with rather sedate trim- not the kinds of hats that stand out.  I have chosen a hat that is a complete departure for her- Gina Foster’s Malplaquet design. I think the vibrant blue would be beautiful on Kate and the lines of this hat would go well with her clean fashion aesthetic and apparent preference to wear her hair down. This hat does look a little like a ceiling medallion but it is unique (that’s what I love about it most!) and I think it’s time for Kate to try some different millinery styles.

What hat would you like Kate to wear this year? Do you like her percher hats or would you like to see her in something different?

**UPDATE- If you would like to share a hat, please post a link to that hat in your comment (original sources preferred). When I approve your comment, I will link the photo so that it is visible to all readers.

*Note- if you have no idea where to look for a hat to suggest, links to the websites of most royal hat designers is on the bottom of the “In The Design” page . Online hat shops Love HatsSamuel’s Hats and  also showcases the work of many designers, as does  and

  1. IMO Makowski Millinery makes the nicest hats that real people can actually wear. A lot of the royal hats have such huge bows and feathers no regular person could wear them. Kate’s hats are the most real and wearable moreso than most other royals that way. Kate also looks really good in blue. That’s why I choose this hat for her. Happy Birthday Kate! http://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/163411349/black-fur-felt-medium-brim-hat-for-women?ref=shop_home_active_19

  2. Pippa Middleton wore Edwina Ibbotson for George’s christening. Maybe she was trying out the brand for Kate? It’s time for Kate to try some new designers. This red hat could be great on Kate if it was styled right.

  3. Wouldn’t it be fun if Kate started wearing hats like this?! I know a lot of people like that she’s so elegant but I wish she had more fun with her fashion and hats.

    • Um… NO! It would be very entertaining! Maybe Prince Harry will marry someone with this kind of millinery taste!!
I took a look at this Guibert Millinery website and there are some interesting and fantastical hats. The hat on the home page is my dream of the perfect hat for Ladies’ Day at Ascot. Since I’ll probably never get to Ascot, I’d love to see this hat on Kate!

    • This hat looks better in the original link I posted than in this still picture…so if anyone wants to see this hat from all angles as it rotates click on the original link. I “gotta pimp my hat out!” lol 🙂

      • Sorry, Rodney. The still images that come up on the Love Hats site look awful compared to the rotating images. I tried for a while but it’s not possible to embed the rotating image here!

    • I love this challenge, however, it would be easier and more enjoyable to be able to upload photos instead of just the links. Less time consuming to view all of these great suggestions, too. Just my humble opinion.

      • Beth, I agree. I’m working to move this site off wordpress where we will have this capability. Stay tuned over the next few weeks.
In the meantime, I will try to edit the comments so that the photos appear. Give me a few hours to experiment with this today.

  4. Well I would love to se her with one of my designs at Ascot ¡¡A dream come true!!
I have only been learning Millinery for one year now, and of my few designs, I would chose this one, as I find it very minimalist, a light design with a japanesse clean line efect and a Philip Treacey orchid touch that inspired me to creat it.
Hope you like it, wish she would like it to 🙂

      • I clicked over to see a bigger picture of this hat and it is so elegant. I looks like a 1920s hat but with Kate’s long hair and one of her pastel dresses, this would be so gorgeous.

  5. Kate wore that divine burgundy fedora for Christmas a few years ago. I’d love to see her in another. You can never go wrong in Philip Treacy

  6. Your suggestion that teal ceiling medallion thing is out of this world. Litterally. As in it looks like a UFO transporting aliens.

Um… no thanks. Her hats now are way better than that joke.

    • I believe Jelsta and Jules, you are referring to my suggestion at the very top, the teal blue Gina Foster hat?! I suspected that some of you dear readers would not agree with me!
