Princess Margriet of the Netherlands celebrates her 71st birthday today (take a look back at her 70th birthday hat retrospective last year). Since here sister’s abdication last year, we have seen less of Princess Margriet than we have in the past – she has certainly earned retirement but fewer engagements inevitably means fewer hats. Margriet has worn hats of all shapes and sizes throughout her royal life. With her short hairstyle, however, I think she looks best in a small, embellished hat. Wouldn’t this beautiful “Black Watch” cocktail hat (the work of Vancouver milliner Kelly Dunlap who designs “The Saucy Milliner” label) be marvelous on Canadian-born Princess Margriet?

It’s a great hat but let’s be real. It’s way too fashionable for Princess Margriet. It’s a hat worthy of Queen Maxima.
The hat gods are SINGING. This is EXQUISITE. Forgive me for saying this but this hat needs to be on Sophie or Kate, someone who will give this milliner serious exposure. Amazing.

Never heard of this designer but she’s fabulous. LOVE it.
An excellent choice, I think. I don’t care for large hats on her. It’s either her hair or the size of her head but her hats seem to just perch on the top of her head like they could just fall off at any moment. This would alleviate that.
I usually like large brimmed hats but looked at all of her hats and you’re right Beth. Large hats look like hovering UFOs on Princess Margriet. This hat is STUNNING. I’m loving this new birthday feature because it’s introducing me to some amazing hats. Totally going to follow the Saucy Milliner from now on!
