Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in Dunedin

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge continued their tour of New Zealand today in Dunedin. For church services this morning at St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral, Kate debuted a new hat. Described by the designer as a “Velour felt cocktail hat with felt feather detail”, the feather motif on this hat was perfect for this tour (the silver fern is a quasi-national New Zealand emblem and unofficial flag). I loved this shade of teal blue on Kate and thought that wearing her hair down gave enough contrast to the outfit- it did not look too matchy-matchy or monochrome despite the hat and dress in exactly the same shade. It’s only the second hat we have seen on Kate this tour but it is my favourite so far. What do you think of this hat?

    • Yes! I didn’t know that the fern was an important symbol for New Zealand and it’s very respectful and sweet of Kate to choose this hat. And her diamond brooch is gorgeous!

  1. I can live with this hat, Kate’s wearing a bit higher off her brow, thanks to the hongi. The fern frond is a sweet nod to the people, and it will easily be able to be replaced with another decoration for another occasion should Kate want to.
I think Will and Kate are doing a fabulous job on this tour, friendly, open, connecting.

  2. Sorry but I’ve been underwhelmed by Kate’s wardrobe on tour, especially after the bright red start. Everything’s so safe and there has been such a lack of hats! I have no problem with her colour blocking – it makes her stand out and that must be a priority – but the designs are very subtle and she hasn’t blinged anything up either. The beaded fern detail on her cocktail dress was lovely, but she had her hair over it so it wasn’t really very striking. And, speaking as a Kiwi, she’s done the silver fern already – the brooch twice, a beaded embellishment and now a hat too. We do have other floral symbols that could be used.

  3. I really like the hat, although I’d probably prefer a bit more contrast to the dress (or maybe keep the hat and change the dress!). But oh dear, as far as I’m concerned it would look so much better on hair held back in some way – the whole set of it just looks messy to me, in contrast to the red hat at the beginning (even though I like this hat more in itself.

  4. It’s a very similar look to that worn by Sophie Wessex at Ascot last year. Not sure why, might preferred Sophie’s. Kate is certainly colour blocking on this trip isn’t she!

  5. She looked every inch a very beautiful young lady, very classy and chic. I love everything about this outfit, the color is great on her, the hat is wonderful (nice tribute to NZ) and the dress. Yes, she is finding her way and there is such a difference this time in her. Love all her outfits so far!

  6. Beautiful color and perfect hat for the occasion: bigger (and easier to see) than hats the Duchess used to wear, small enough for another round of rubbing noses. Today’s dress is a better length than the red worn last week (too long) or than those the Duchess typically has worn (too short). A lot of effort obviously has gone into modifying the Duchess’s image slightly for a more traditional royal image.

  7. I do like the colour. It seems a bit too round and I think a more rectangular shape with a point towards the front would be nice. I think it is time to have about four inches cut off her hair.

    • CP Mary of Denmark has hair that is the perfect length – long enough to be feminine and be put up for tiaras but short enough that it looks professional and she’s not fiddling with it.
