As Queen Máxima’s hat for Koningsdag was a doughnut of disappointment, us fans of royal millinery were forced to turn to other members of the Dutch Royal family for more palatable hats. Kicking off the other hats we saw today is our favourite former Queen, Princess Beatrix, who repeated her pale grey-lavender four-tiered brimless hat with side spray of feathers. While I’m not terribly keen on the dull colour and the concentric circles of this hat make me want to randomly exclaim, “Bull’s Eye!”, it is such a classic hat shape for Princess Beatrix that I’m not going to complain. It’s nice to see her back in the spotlight and clearly enjoying herself.

My favourite look of the day was Princess Laurentien. She looked effortlessly chic in this cornflower blue fascinator which paired so well with her sublime outfit and fantastic haircut. This is the perfect event for a fascinator and this is how it should be done.

Princess Margriet also wore a fascinator in classic black and white. Classic colour, but not style, I’m afraid. This headpiece looked like a chicken was nesting in her hair. But as bad as that sounds, it was still an improvement over the doughnut.

This was not the best day in Dutch Royal millinery history, I’m afraid. Did you like any of the hats today? Hat bombs aside, it was evident that this family was having a joyfully marvelous time together and that is always wonderful to see.

The blue fascinator from Princess Laurentien is from Eudia ( eudia.nl) again! The milliner herself doesn’t give away to much (doesn’t like to shout out), that’s why it’s difficult to keep track when a royal wears her designs!

I only have eyes for Beatrix wearing what I regard as a proper hat and with someone’s nosegay strapped to her wrist. I am not worried about the pale colour of the hat or the “old fashioned” swirly fabric. Her clothes and hat are well made and distinctive as usual, her hair is well groomed and her jewellery just enough. OK maybe slightly darker lipstick would have been good. The rest is ‘blah” although they seem to be having fun which is good.
The Bull’s Eye goes beautifully with the outfit and makes Princess Beatrice look just like herself. I like the flowers on the side.
Princess Laurentien’s outfit is spectacular and stands out in the crowd. Princess Margriet’s fascinator, on the other hand, bears a slight resemblance to the head coverings worn at children’s birthday parties, but this may be due to the angle at which the photograph was taken.
They all beat Máxima’s disaster. She needs a stylist.
Hat Queen you know I hat to disagree with you, but I can’t give you a pass on P. Laurentien”s “fantastic haircut”! It looks like she hasn’t brushed it, or even looked in a mirror, and just plonked the headband thing on. Her fringe needs to be pulled back, or something, she just looks unkempt. But I do think you’re right about Q. Max’s hat, it’s far too close to her hair colour (and is anybody else made afraid by the sight on one leather glove on her daughter’s shoulder … it looks oddly menacing?! 🙂 ).
And imagine how much more oomph P. Bea would have had if her outfit had been a solid colour (or even two) rather than that very old-fashioned swirly pattern.
A blah donut, a multi-ringed cake-tin, a little girl’s stolen ribbon headband, and an escapee from the chookrun. My money is on the littlest A with her perfectly pretty pink headband with rosette. I see great things ahead for this littlest royal fashionista. ❤
