Norwegian Royals Host Israeli President

The Norwegian Royal Family welcomed Israeli President Shimon Pereson a two-day state visit to Norway on Monday, May 12. For the official welcome ceremony, Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore a most unusual headpiece. It appeared to be a mass of white flowers swathed in black tulle net worn as a sort of calot hat on the back of her head. This headpiece has a Chanel-esque look to it which makes me both awed and perplexed by it…. and at a loss for words. High fashion or highly unattractive? You be the judge.

Previously Worn: I believe this hat is new

Princess Astrid stepped in for Queen Sonja at this event, who was away on a private trip. It is difficult to see but Princess Astrid appears to be wearing a dark sienna orange fascinator. It’s an unexpected headpiece for her and that makes me rather like it. Crown Princess Mette Marit, May 12, 2014 | Royal Hats

  1. Oh dear, I think I might be going a little against the trend… These photos don’t give us a really up close look at the hat, but there’s just something not quite right for mine- perhaps the whole thing is a little too big or the tulle a little bit much….. Not totally sold, but agree that it goes well with the classic B and W look and it does look quite nice from the side view. Jury still out but leaning towards OK. Cheers.

  2. I like the outfit going back to Jackie O… I would like to see a bit more on her actual head covered even a wee piece of black netting…a little too bare from the straight front.

  3. Approved! (Only because it’s Mette-Marit — and because it works with the whole outfit.) Seems like something more likely to be worn by Princess Caroline?

    • Yes, yes, yes! Great for her – works with her hair, the outfit, the occasion. I was going to say it reminded me of something Grace Kelly would have worn in the 50s which is A-OK in my book.

  4. I like it, especially nice with this hairdo. The whole outfit, with the three-quarter sleeves and long gloves, has a fun, retro look.

  5. I like both princesses’ headpieces. Mette-Marit’s mass of flowers goes quite nicely with her hair, I think, and the whole outfit is well coordinated. I like both the front and the side views.

  6. Oh I rather like it. She’s been doing this sleek ice maiden look for a while now and I’m a sucker for it.
