Queen Máxima Celebrates World MS Day

Queen Máxima celebrated World Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Day in Voorschoten today where she received the 1st copy of the Dutch edition of the International MS Atlas. For this event, Máxima  paired her red ruched straw toque hat with vibrant raspberry trousers and a cheery red and white gingham blouse. I love how the ruched shape of the hat complimented the ruched collar of this blouse

After Máxima’s less than successful pairing of ‘pants with picture hat’ last week, I must concede that this pairing of hat and trousers, in theory, is much better (a toque hat is a fantastic shape for a trouser outfit). However, the colour clash between the red hat and the raspberry pink trousers and Máxima’s unruly hair makes this ensemble an unsuccessful one in my book.

Is seems that when it comes to her wardrobe and hats, Queen Máxima’s legendary risk taking results in the most dramatic of successes but also carries great potential for flops. That’s why I love her so much and why we all can’t wait to see what she wears next. What do you think of her red toque today?

Japanese Royal Engagement

The Imperial Household Agency announced the engagement of Princess Noriko of Takamado to Mr. Kunimaro Senge today. Mr. Senge is the eldest son of the chief priest of Izumo-taisha grand shrine in Shimane Prefecture; the wedding will be held in Izumo Taisha in October. The happy couple attended a press conference today where Princess Noriko looked radiant in a bubblegum pink satin bowler hat.

Dutch Monarchs on Day 2 of German Visit

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of The Netherlands vsited Münster and Essen today for the second and final day of their quick trip to Germany. Máxima looked beautiful in a blush pink ensemble topped with the flowing gossamer pink striped headpiece she unveiled earlier this year. The first time we saw this headpiece, its effect was greatly diminished by the dowdy brown coat she wore it with. Today, however, when  paired with this tailored Natan dress, the lightness and movement of this hat shone through (aided further with those spectacular jewels!)  I thought this headpiece on Queen Máxima today was absolutely beautiful.

While this sweeping headpiece still reminds me of the hat Queen Mathilde worn for her enthronement last year, Máxima both owned it and made it shine today. I’m curious- has your opinion of this headpiece changed with its outing today, just as mine did?

Danish and Norwegian Queens Celebrate Norwegian Constitution

On Saturday, Queen Sonja of Norway and Queen Margrethe of Denmark attended a seminar on the bicentenary of the Norwegian Constitution and unveiled the sculpture “Dobbeltlegeme” by Morten Stræde. For these final events held in Copenhagen, the two queens repeated navy ensembles with coordinating hats. Queen Margrethe wore her much loved red straw picture hat featuring a textured open weave straw detail on one side of the hat.

Queen Sonja repeated the white straw hat with cloche-style crown wrapped in a ruched navy and white sash that she wore for her Stortinget visit last week. The photos released today show this hat to much greater effect and remove my previous misgivings about it. The side view of this hat below, which includes the lovely large folded bow, is particularly pretty.

I always love seeing members of different royal houses at joint engagements and thought these two queens looked quite smashing today. What do you think of their hats?
