Princess Beatrix Opens Two Exhibitions

Last Thursday, June 5, 2014, Princess Beatrix opened an exhibition detailing gifts of silver received by the Dutch royal family at the new Silvermuseum in Schoonhoven. She repeated a dark straw brimless hat with sides wrapped in layered lengths of straw. I originally thought this was a navy hat but a look back into my archives showed this hat is black- or, rather, we have seen this same hat in black thrice before.  The mix of navy clothing and jewelry with a black hat is a little perplexing to me, especially as we know Princess Beatrix has a closet full of beautiful blue hats.

Yesterday, Princess Beatrix opened an exhibition on the life and work of the late Dutch artist, Mr. Joep Nicolas, at the Cuypershuis Museum in Roermond. For this event, she repeated a black straw band wrapped with an interesting textured straw band around the full height of the crown. I like this textured detail although from the side view, the straight edges of the crown and this band don’t seem so very straight.

  1. I love her but these hats just don’t work for me! They do look like a stack of plates and I have seen the Princess in much nicer ones. However, she is like Queen Elizabeth, her smile makes my heart sing!

  2. I have long been a fan of the hats of Beatrix, but I cannot warm to either of these hats. They are too dark for summer. I do like the textured band on the second hat, though it looks crooked in the side view.

  3. The second hat and outfit looks very up to date on her. I do like those colors on her also. She will never fully retire, this is her life and I say enjoy every minute of it Queen Bea.

  4. June 5 hat looks navy to me on my monitor. I do like that style of hate on her – I call it the ‘stack of plates’ hat! Just looks like a big old stack of plates – I don’t think I would like this on many, but I’ve grown to really like it on Bea. I love the straw band on the 2nd hat – very summer. We wore a lot of straw in the 50s and early 60s and you KNEW it was summer when you got out your straw bags and hats!

  5. Me think it is a pity the hat has a structured band, would have been more elegant if the hat itself was structured. She is a busy Bea, had expected her to really quit, but no such thing.
