British Royals In Glasgow

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh viewed venues for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this morning. The Queen repeated her rose, green and yellow cloche hat with square crown, contrasting brim and spray of feathers and bow loops on the side. There is a lot going on on this little hat but it is a balanced and fun cloche that gives some life to her very plain yellow coat. The crown might be taller than I like to see on Her Majesty but this doesn’t keep me from liking this hat. What do you think of it?

  1. I really like this hat, one of the most successful of this shape which does tend to the too-tall. I think it works because the colours of the various trimmings blend so harmoniously. It’s also an example of where the colours of the dress underneath have been picked up in the hat particularly successfully. I agree it could be more an autumnal hat than a summer one.

  2. It appears too fall-like and the crown is too tall, but I do like it. I like it much better than the coat that appears rather sloppy, and somehow ill-fitting. I am wondering if she is trying to compensate for lack of height with a tall crown. It doesn’t work.

  3. I like this hat. I think generally the hat looks fairly well proportioned, perhaps the rather large trim covering up the crown helps to create that illusion. I like the smaller brim and I also like that it is a contrasting colour; given the plainness of the coat, an all yellow hat would have been too much. I actually quite like the trim and the little bit of yellow piping around the brim helps to bring it all together.

    • I always thought that too. Clearly she was taking after her mother when she commissioned that one: ‘Same again please!’

  4. I like that she’s going back into her wardrobe to find some old favourites again. She’s had such a run of new outfits that I was wondering if she was going to repeat anything.

So this is from the 2010 Canadian tour – and she debuted some really great hats then. This is one of them. I like the cloche style on her (it’s one of her standard shapes actually) and this one, whilst making me think of a Harvest Festival, is really nice. I’d wager it’s and AK, but it’s a good one. Quite fun, this hat.
