Prince Masahito and Princess Hanako of Hitachi attended a ceremony in Tokyo this morning marking the 110th anniversary of the Japan Institute for Promoting Invention and Innovation held in Tokyo (the Prince is honorary president of the institute). Princess Hanako wore a soft aqua hat with rounded crown and small brim, trimmed with a wide roll of ruched coordinating fabric. This trim gave the hat such softness and the most interesting shape. The Japanese royal family members will likely never be on the cutting edge of millinery fashion but I thought this prim hat looked really lovely on Hanako.

Very unusual for a Japanese royal but I like it very much!
Attractive and appropriate hat. The rushed fabric on the hat goes beautifully with the trim or stitching on the lapels of the jacket.
Nice soft and unusual hat, beautiful color. The japanese royals always look very classy and distinguished.
This hat is unique, distinctive and very different in style from all others we have seen from Japan.
Oh, it’s a trim! Yes, I see it now. I thought at first glance that it was a most unusual puffy hat based on the bulbous shape of a mediaeval cap! But no… I think I’m probably disappointed that it isn’t, it would have been different. It’s not bad as it is, though. Pretty colour.
