Autumn Phillips At Ascot Racecourse

Princess Anne’s daughter-in-law, Autumn Phillips, attended the King George Day Meet at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday. She wore a lovely percher disk hat in pale blue straw which was trimmed with curling feathers and a large silk bloom. There is a lot going on with this little hat but I think it works beautifully in this muted colour and paired with Autumn’s structured sheath dress. It’s a fun piece of millinery she wears quite well, don’t you think?

  1. Mr Fitzroy will avoid the hair question….overall she looks lovely, and very much herself.
It’s impossible to look at this hat without giggling a bit though, because the image of one of Empress Michiko’s little saucer hats exploding — keeps running through this one’s addled brain!

  2. Lovely hat. Wish she had gone with a more sleek hairstyle – either a low chignon or even a sleek ponytail at the base of the neck. But the dress is very nice and goes well with the percher hat.

  3. It must be my Australian slant on things, but I have no problem with Autumn’s hair being loose and actually think that is elegantly casual with the little piece pulled back from the left side of her face. We don’t do hats here in Australia that much, well we do, but they are usually used as protection from the sun, not so much for aesthetic purposes – except for perhaps a day at the races. So……..that also explains why I think Autumn’s hat is quite lovely and really suits her choice of outfit. I haven’t always liked some of her fashion forays in the past but I think she looks really nice here and comfortable in herself. Thanks.

  4. Love the color, love the hat. Joining in the chorus of “put up the hair” on this one. I think the saucer could be an inch or two larger, but this is minor.

  5. If she pulled her hair back toward the nape of her neck, and pinned it under, the way the Countess of Wessex does at times, I think the hat could have looked better on her.

I don’t know how others feel, but what is with all the royal messy hair these days?

    • I agree, the messy hair spoils the whole look. I don’t normally care much for perchers, but it works here, as the proportions are good, the trim is not excessive for a day at the races, the color is perfect for her, and the rest of the outfit is simple. If only these royals would accept the old adage, “hat or hair.”

  6. Not crazy about the upturned brim but everything else is good. Hat is a nice colour on a blonde. Hairstyle needs some help but at least she doesn’t have fried ends like Max. Love her dress!

  7. I like it! It’s fun and exuberant and perfect for a race day. Some saucer hats are so devoid of decoration that they might as well be a circle of cardboard. Autumn looks like she is having a wonderful day!

  8. I do like the hat, but not the hairstyle. Not sure what I’d do with the hair, but maybe put it up or whatever to make it look more elegant.

  9. Nope — not for me – it looks too ‘tippy’ on her head — tho I am not typically a fan of the Percher style hat.
