Imperial Couple Visit Nagasaki

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko began a two day visit to Nagasaki yesterday. The Imperial Couple began their trip with a visit to Peace Park in Nagasaki City (the park commemorating the atomic bombing of the Nagasaki on August 9, 1945). Empress Michiko repeated her white petite saucer hat trimmed with white, black and hound’s tooth checked bows coordinating with her suit. We seldom see Michiko in strong colours or patterns and she wears this checked print well. The black and white ensemble also struck just the right note for the memorial visit.

Later in the day, the Emperpor and Empress attended the opening ceremony of The 69th National Sports Festival in Isahaya City. Empress Michiko repeated a pale blue saucer hat trimmed with folded bow. The rim of the saucer hat was upturned around the back, giving a slight variation on the Empress’ signature hat style. Blue is a great colour for her, don’t you think?

  1. She looks lovely in that blue color, and I love the blue hat. I’m not a hat-wearing person, but I would wear that hat. 🙂

  2. I think they are a very handsome couple and always elegantly dressed. The two suits the Empress wore were very nice; I loved the light blue suit – the color looked so becoming on her. As for her hats, I wasn’t a fan of either. To me they appeared to be laying too far forward on her forehead. I would have loved to have seen a full face photo of both outfits to get a better perspective on the hats.

  3. Older royals tend to have an easily recognizable signature style. While one does have to look rather closely to tell that the slightly upturned back on the blue hat is different from the Empress’s regular saucers, I do think Empress MIchiko always looks carefully put together and appropriate. I like both hats.

  4. I much prefer a “proper” hat to a saucer, percher, or fascinator…. However, given the Japanese royals’ penchant for bumper hats (shudder), these saucers will do. The white gloves don’t quite work with the first outfit, as the white of her jacket is a different shade than that of the gloves, but I don’t know that black would work here or if it would just seem too jarring. I like the empress’s choices overall, here, as I usually do. She is a very elegant woman.
