Princess Beatrix Celebrates 200th Anniversary of Royal Military Police

Princess Beatrix attended the Royal Military Police’s annual ‘Wapgendag’ (Weapon’s Day) at at Palace Het Loo in Apeldoorn yesterday. For this event, which coincided with the Police’s 200th anniversary, she repeated a navy straw hat with flat crown and brim, trimmed with straw and fabric bands around the crown and a mass of navy and white fabric petals on the side. I suspect the fabric petals are meant to soften the right angles of this hat (angles that attractively compliment the shape of Beatrix’s face and hairstyle) but they don’t show well in my opinion. What do you think of this navy hat?

  1. The hat pin in her hat beside the fabric flower tricked my eyes into thinking that she had a little fabric bird on her hat! (Note to self…make eye appointment) I think Princess Beatrix looks lovely in this hat.

  2. I like this hat very much but I think the fabric petals could be replaced with something else. They are a trifle floppy. I think a rosette of the same navy straw would work fine.

I notice that straw hats are still being worn well into Autumn. Must be that climate change!

  3. MrFitzroy’s bifocals, combined with a computer screen, and an unfortunate angle of view, can make for some interesting misreads. As was first glance at the above headline:

First thought — We havent been around THAT long….

  4. Looks great on her – many this looks too much like a Spanish cowboy hat – but it doesn’t come off that way on her here –

  5. The third picture, top view, looks as though this hat either was not made well or was crushed a little at its bottom left.
Although the hat appears wider and not so tall as Angela Kelly’s flat brim, flat crown hats for Queen Elizabeth, it looks dangerously similar. I like it.

  6. I like the shape of the hat, but the decorations look best from the back. I love the effort she puts in to her appearances. Hair, makeup, jewelry etc. She is a delight.
