Queen Máxima had a busy day yesterday, opening new facilities of the CONO cheesemakers in Westbeemster and a non-profit support program of the Waaier Foundation at the Alkmaar Stadium in Alkmaar. For these events, she debuted a new brimless hat made from the same rough, nubby woven silk linen as her swing jacket. The colour is more neutral than what we usually see Máxima wear, but looked really great with her gold jewelry and maroon pencil skirt.
I was all about to wax lyrical about this new pillbox when I saw this photo montage and learned that this lovely pillbox was not, in fact, a pillbox at all. I’m going to pretend this hat isn’t a donut because from the front, it is so pretty. What do you, dear readers, think of this hat and matching jacket?
Designer: Fabienne Delvigne. It is the “Tino” design.
Previously Worn: This is a new hat

I love Queen Máxima! I loved her outfit! I loved the butterfly brooches! I loved the “looks like a pillbox hat” but I’m not loving that it’s a donut hat!
Darn! Love it as a pillbox, not as crazy about the open shapes she and Mathilde are favoring lately. However, on the whole the outfit is really well put-together so I still give it 5 stars! 😀
Thought it was a pillbox and loved it – the colour, material and shape really suit her. Clicked on the montage link and my pleasure dropped several notches. Maybe these hats are cheaper because they don’t use as much fabric or take as much time or something…
I would have loved a suit or dress of the jacket fabric. It’s gorgeous on her. The maroon skirt is almost wrong with the gold colours. As for the comments about the jacket looking like maternity wear – anything that has a bit of volume in the tummy area can be criticised in this way, which is taking a narrow view of fashion. Swing jackets and coats are fantastic to wear. Poor Max gets criticised for wearing clothes that are too tight, now for something that’s too loose! Seems like she’s on a hiding to nothing.
Fabienne Delvigne, designer of many of these “convertible” hats, is very clear that her design aesthetic is airy, light and open. I think these open topped hats are reflecting this design perspective. Many of Delvigne’s designs are beautiful (our favourite royal hat in 2013 is a prime example) but somehow, the donuts don’t seem to be very popular with us non royal observers!
Queen Maxima looks lovely, as always. I might like a pillbox better, but she clearly favors these topless toppers. I’m just glad it’s not one of the ‘bandage’ hats. This is a huge improvement over those!
Nice but not the skirt colour. I would prefer the entire outfit in the same material.
First of all, that cheese looks YUMMY!
Queen Maxima looks just lovely! I’ll overlook the donut hat…it’s great looking from the front!
off topic (a lot of red hats and one green veil) http://www.hellomagazine.com/royalty/2014111421903/prince-moulay-rachid-wedding-oum-keltoum-boufares/
I think this is exceptionally elegant!
I love Queen Max!! Her smile lights up her whole face and her eyes shine! The hat looks wonderful from the front and I’m with Hat Queen and not even thinking about the back! 😻😻😻 The last picture with the cheese I think the Queen is wondering whether she should just take a bite, so adorable. Queen Max really is lovely!
I always think these hats look good from the front. If Kate Cambridge is known for her lace dresses, then Maxima is known for these little hats. I didn’t think it was that bad, and it looks fine with her outfit. I did love the earrings and the matching jacket and hat material, but I do agree that the jacket looks like maternity wear.
The hat is fine with her blonde hair but I’m not sure it would as well with dark hair. That swing coat, however, looks like maternity wear.
A complete hat would look too much like one of the cheeses she is inspecting. 🙂 I love Beemster cheese!
Absolute fabulous ! very original and very Queen Maxima!
It would be brilliant if it were a true pill box hat but I’m going to like it all the same! Lovely outfit.
Not as bad as the paper bag donut hats, but have to say right off I thought, gads she’s got a new crownless hat looking at it from the front. I never thought for a second it was a pillbox – guess that’s just ’cause we’ve come to know her for those icky hats.
Be nice. Queen Maxima wore a pill box black hat this week that was very nice. And this is a fine hat. I find your comment offensive.
And for the record, we have come to know Queen Maxima for her hard work and open personality. It is fun to discuss the hats but do not say she is known only for her hats. That is not fair.
Nevermind the hat, that pair of butterfly brooches are gorgeous!
