Continuing with our look at the hats worn by the British Royals in 2014, we now turn our attention to millinery worn by Princess Anne, her family and family members of the late Princess Margaret. In cases where a hat was worn more than once, it shows up in the review list just once; please click on each photo to link to the original post on each hat, complete with additional views, larger photos and detailed information. Here are all the hats worn by these British Royals in 2014:
Princess Anne
Autumn Phillips
Zara Phillips Tindall
Viscountess Linley (23 – 26) and Lady Sarah Chatto
I think the group of hats worn on these five women contains more millinery diversity than most others we have seen in our 2014 royal hat review so far (Princess Anne’s hats alone cover a vast spectrum of hat styles!). Do any of these beauties deserve your nomination for favourite hat of 2014? Are any on your list of least favourites?

I love Princess Anne’s #6, but not on her. The best hat on her by a large margin is #11 (trilby?).
I also like Zara Pillips’ #20.
# 5 on The Princess Royal is hideous! On the worst list for certain!
Princess Anne: I think the best one for her is #11, the gray fedora. Only because I think it suits her best and I think she should wear what she likes.
Autumn: The last two hats (Christmas hats) were spectacular and look so good on her.
Zara: The purple confection! This might be my favorite of this group!
I like #23 for Viscountess Linley, and I like Lady Sarah’s hat very much.
My family and I have discussed these hats and read the comments and we decided the following:
Princess Anne: best hat is Photo 4; worst hat is Photo 10.
Autumn Phillips: best hat is Photo 17; worst hat is Photo 15.
Zara Phillips: best hat is the 2nd one labelled Photo 18 (the eggplant one); worst hat is to its left (the first hat labelled Photo 18, it looks like a snake on her hat). Please note there are 2 hats labelled as Photo 18.
Viscountess Linley: best hat is Photo 26; worst hat is Photo 25.
Lady Sarah Chatto: one look only, it’s alright but not wonderful.
HatQueen, you have labelled 2 hats Photo 18 in the Zara Phillips group. Could you please rename as 18A and 18B? Happy, safe and prosperous New Year to HatQueen and all the readers.
Happy New Year to all!
Princess Anne looks best in brimmed hats, and my favorites are 4, 6, and 11. I would like to wear 11 myself and the outfit she wore it with. Her worst is 10, and I don’t like stovepipes anyway, but this one is most unflattering to her. I agree with Kew Gardens that her recycled and dated millinery and fashion has become tiresome.
Autumn Phillips has worn some great outfits and hats this year, and I think her best is 17, followed by 16. I would like to wear these hats myself.
Zara Phillips Tindall usually has good taste in hats and outfits and she knows what suits her. My favorites are 18, 19 and 20.
Viscountess Linley looks best in 26. Her worst look is the over-trimmed hat at 25.
Lady Sarah Chatto looks good at 27, and I usually like her outfits and hats, so I’m disappointed that we didn’t see more of her this year.
Correction! Sorry HatQueen, looking back over the comments I didn’t realise there were 2 hats labelled 18 in the Zara Phillips Tindall grouping. I was referring to 18B, I don’t like 18A.
best for me is 14 I love Autumn’s style. 10 is by far my least favorite,
Love #14, I think Autumn’s style is underrated and she seems to have a confident attitude that looks nice with the menswear style.
I think the shape and angle of #5 is the best I’ve seen on Anne. However all that folderol on it, just ruins it . Number 16 for Autumn, if she’d lose that ill fitting and too fussy coat. For Zara, #18 might be the worst of the year for me. Looks like a strange snake found a nest and she didn’t notice. #20 would be nice for her, if that strange feather were removed. I see nothing to admire 23-27.
This is fun to see all the hats worn and put together. Thanks for all your hard work.
#11 and maybe #20 ….pass on the rest
Anne never fails to surprise, and she did it again this year. I was going to nominate #5 for one of my favorites of the year, but then saw how the brim was covered in feathers; most disappointing. Nevertheless, I do think it is a great shape and style for Anne, who doesn’t often wear such big hats. I always have loved #10 as well. Autumn usually disappoints me with her hattery, but she won 3/4 for me this year; she definitely wears winter chapeaux much better. Zara always has fun hats, although #18 in black with pheasant feathers (not 18 in purple) was one of the most bizarre hats of the year; #19, the Jane Taylor in dove grey, was my personal favorite for Zara this year. Finally, if we snipped the one extra-long branch off Serena’s Ascot hat in #25, then I would be in absolute love.
Princess Anne’s style certainly is all over the place. When she’s goes for a dressy look, she sometimes pulls it off: hats 7 and 9 are actually rather nice, I think, and casual 13 from last week makes the outfit pop. #6 would have been nice decades ago, but looks dated, and #10 is totally out of proportion. #5 and 8 probably never would work. Many of her other hats just disappear into her hair.
I do like #16 and #20.
I am passing on Ann. I am tired of commenting on her recycled and dated millinery and fashion.
As I commented on the Christmas millinery post I see Autumn as more of a casual dresser and I think the fedora No. 14 suits her very well. I am not sure that caramel and camel and brown are ideal for her colouring. I would like to see her experiment with other colours and navy is a step in the right direction. Her milliner has an attractive dressier fedora in black (or other colours on demand) which I think would suit her better than No 16 the brown cocktail hat. I like No 17 but feel it needs a sleeker, more sophisticated (and better fitting) coat and doesn’t suit her more casual style.
Oh Zara. Such a pretty blond girl and every now and then she gets her outfits right. Not a serious hat wearer in my book which is a shame. No 20 is the best of these but with effort she could do much better.
I am never sure what Viscountess Linley is trying to achieve with her outfits and hats. A little too much for my liking. No. 25 is an interesting hat and skilfully made hat but it doesn’t do much for her except make her standout!
Lady Sarah’s hat was fine on its first appearance but looks a bit dated now. Would anyone else like to see her in some of Empress Michiko’s larger hats?
Lady Sarah would look good in some larger saucers, I agree. I am also tired of Princess Anne’s recycled and dated millinery and fashion.
