Birthday of Princess Beatrix

Royal HatsPrincess Beatrix of the Netherlands celebrates her 76th birthday today. Last year, we looked at her incredible wardrobe of hats (see here, here and here); while Beatrix has worn nearly every style (and shape and colour) of hat imaginable, she has settled into a familiar signature millinery “look” during the past decade. It is amazing to think of her venturing far away from this signature look but I would love to see her in something a little more linear instead of the rounded shape hats she usually wears- something like the “Sophie” hat by British designer Bundle MacLaren

Queen Máxima Opens Tech Facility

Lely Group, an international producer of ground-breaking innovations for the agricultural sector, welcomed Queen Máxima  to officially open their new campus in Maasslius this morning. For this opening, she repeated her charcoal grey hat with dramatic upturned brim. The photos today give us a better view of this hat- I think it is more striking from the back and side than it is from the front. Máxima paired this hat with a monochrome grey ensemble that read a little flat to me, although I love that her coat was lined with the same mini hounds tooth fabric as her dress. What do you think of this hat and outfit together?

Queen Opens Village Hall in Norwich

Children waved flags and cheered as the Queen arrived to open the new village hall at Thornham today. For this event, she repeated her cherry red felt hat trimmed with side bloom and curling bow (see the trims better in a photo the last time Her Majesty wore this hat). I think this is a good hat for Queen Elizabeth; while the shape is fairly simple (with an almost pork pie hat shaped crown), the style punch comes from the colour. I think it’s a great colour for the Queen. What do you think?

Princess Beatrix Attends Freedom Conference

Princess Beatrix attended the 9th meeting the ninth meeting of Liberty Connected at the University of Utrecht today, January 28. For this meeting, attended by representatives of various religions and philosophies who presented their dreams Netherlands, Princess Beatrix wore one of her signature brimless hats. This one, in black straw, was wrapped in wide textured black band set slightly off center. The whole look was too harsh for me; I thought the colour and shape was not terribly flattering for Beatrix and left her looking rather pasty. A hat that does that is not a successful one in my books. What do you think?

Japanese Royals Open Ski Competition

On Sunday, Prince Masahito and Princess Hanako of Hitachi attended the opening ceremony of the 64th Chubu Region Ski Championship of Japan held in Katsuyama City. Princess Hanako repeated a cream coloured bowler style hat with bow trim. It is a rather sedate hat that does not excite me very much. However, its pairing with her lovely royal blue dress worked better than the last two outfits it was paired with so I’ll be happy and leave it at that. What do you think of this hat?
