Queen Máxima Visits Health Care Centre

Queen Máxima of The Netherlands marked the national week of Health and Welfare yesterday with a visit to a health care center  in Etten-Leur. She repeated her a chocolate wool hat with sharply upturned brim and square crown. I like this hat paired with Máxima’s chocolate and cream hound’s tooth coat although the look is quite a wintery one (am I the only one desperate for spring?!). Her hair style looked great with this hat although I would have loved to see some small earrings to polish off the whole look. What do you think?

First Day of Cheltenham Festival

The Cheltenham Festival began yesterday with a full day of races and attendance by one of Britian’s horse-mad royals, Zara Phillips. For this event, Zara repeated a black chapeau with multiple looped feather trim. This hat has undergone a renovation since its debut in 2012– you’ll notice that the tall feathers were removed.  Does it work for me? No. The change in feathers doesn’t alter the awkward shape of this hat – the a stylized mini version of a pilgrim hat looks costumey. If she was determined to top this coat with a black hat with feather trim, I think a better option would have been the Jane Taylor design Zara wore to this event last year.

This begs the question- how many black hats trimmed with feathers does the average royal hat wearer need in their millinery wardrobe?! I can’t wait to hear your opinions.

British Royals at Commonwealth Observance

Members of the British Royal Family congregated at Westminister Abbey today for the annual Commonwealth Observance Service. Queen Elizabeth stood out in her beautiful watermelon pink rose hat (voted by you, dear readers, as one of your top 10 favourite royal hats last year). I always think she looks bright, cheery and so very lovely in this hat.

The Duchess of Cornwall debuted a new piece of millinery today. This hat featured a calot style base of ecru wool edged in monochrome wool leaves that swept around the hat to a tall peak. I’m not sure if this hat was supposed to look like a Roman crown of laurel leaves (think Caesar) or remind us of the spiky circle on the Commonwealth Flag but the odd shape and bland colour make me want to send this hat to a gardener to be pruned.

The Countess of Wessex repeated a beautiful cocktail hat with lace covered base and large looped bow. I thought it was a lovely compliment to her tailored coat dress and she looked beautiful. Perhaps some colour next time, Sophie?

Today’s lovely royal hats seemed to create a lovely cream background against which Queen Elizabeth’s hat really stood out. Which one of the hats in this trio was your favourite?

Danish Queen Celebrates Church Centenary

Queen Margrethe of Denmark attended the 100th anniversary of Simeon’s Church in Copenhagen yesterday. For this centenary celebration, Margrethe repeated one of my least favourite hats. Hopefully, the festivities were not dampened by this rather unfortunate helmet.
