  1. I agree with Janae – when Max is great she is SPECTACULAR and that compensates for all of the risky choices she makes which fall flat. However, I think the Duchess of Cornwall should get best overall style because she consistently looks beautiful in her hats, which are innovative and stylish, contrary to the bland (yet quite pretty) style of the Duchess of Cambridge.

  2. I agree with Joanne as well. I can perhaps see the argument that Max’s extreme highs and lows keep her the most interesting to watch, but my vote is going to Sophie Wessex. To me, she keeps enough innovation to be interesting, and rarely do I dislike one of her hats. Haya gets an honorable mention, although not included in this poll.

    • The 5 finalists here all received significantly more nominations than any of the other royals. There was a clear group of “Honourable Mentions” which included Princess Haya, Empress Michiko, Queen Mathilde, Princess Alexandra of Kent, Queen Silvia and Princess Beatrice of York.

      • Thanks for the clarification! I would imagine these 5 wore the most hats, too, so perhaps more opportunities for nomination.

And, to be clear, I was not objecting to Maxima’s inclusion in the group so much as explaining my voting rationale 🙂

        • Interesting- Empress Michiko, Queen Margrethe, Queen Silvia, Princess Beatrix and Queen Mathilde were also ‘up there’ in terms of the number of hats they wore. I thought that the Duchess of Cornwall and Countess of Wessex wore surprisingly few!

  3. Agree with Joanne, Queen Max it seems has loss maybe more times than she has won. It does not seem balanced compared to other ladies here. Her wins are big her losses it seems are even bigger.
The most outstanding hat had no chance of getting here for various reasons…lost her name…the young girl who wore the grey hat at a funeral. Fantastic hat but she being so young I guess only had one hat in the competition.
Our own wonderful Queen had many negative responses to the hats her designers gave her this year to wear. I am surprised her hats are on this list.
I do not like being critical when Hat Queen buts so many hours into this blog and it is really appreciated. I look forward to it everyday. Thank you.

  4. I’m sorry but Queen Max has 4 hats in the worst poll and it looks like one of them is going to win. How can she possibly win the best overall style as well? It makes no sense.

    • When Max is great, she’s SPECTACULAR. So spectacular that they compensate for the disasters.

I think she deserves to win because her hats are so daring they are either the very best of all or the very worst. That sure makes it exciting to see what she’s going to put on her head next. When I see her name in a post heading I get all fluttery with excitement to see what she wore. No one else does that like she does.

      • Janae I agree, Queen Maxima may not always get it right but she sure grabs our attention and when she does get it right, she looks spectacular.
