Swedish Monarchs Open Exhibit

Last Friday, King Carl Gutaf and Queen Silvia opened an exhibition on the life, paintings and art collection of Prince Eugen (this year is the 150th anniversary of his birth) at the Waldemarsudde in Stockholm. For this event, Queen Silvia accessorized her pale pink suit and lace blouse with a dark clutch purse and fur calot hat. The contrast between the suit and sable brown hat was unexpected but provided a welcome wintertime context to the pastel ensemble. Fur calots will never be included on my list of most favourite royal hats but I think this one worked very well for Queen Silvia. What do you think of this hat and its pairing with this ensemble?

  1. Queen Silvia is one of my favourite royals and usually dresses very well. She does seem to have got things pretty mixed up this time! I don’t think she is flattered by this calot hat, and as other people have written, it is a bit too close to her hair colour. It is the type of hat you wear with a winter coat, not a pastel suit. It also rides too high atop her thick hair. I do like the suit, but it is more like a suit you would wear in winter in Australia, not Sweden. I would like to wear this suit, but not with the other pieces. The lace blouse is good, but it doesn’t belong with the suit or the hat. I hate it when the sleeves of a blouse underneath show below the sleeve cuffs of a jacket or a coat. The blouse is a delicate lace and a feminine pastel pink colour, so I would wear it with a softly tailored skirt to an evening function, not a daytime suit. The dark clutch is chic, but it looks wrong with the pink suit, and was obviously used to try to tie in the brown fur hat.

  2. Yes I do not think Royals or anyone should wear fur. I think the royals are doing an unfairness to animals and suggesting to others that it is alright maybe even the in thing to do. Hope they get the message to stop wearing fur.

  3. When I opened the page, the first thing I thought was Oh QS’s hair, what happened? Then I read and looked and agree with many comments here that the hat while lovely is not a good choice with her hair, they blending of the hair and hat makes it difficult see the hat. While I love the suit, not the lace blouse, a simple plain cream blouse would have been perfect with her jewels. The lace is all wrong color and fabric for this suit. She is a very beautiful lady and with all that is going on, she looks lovely.

  4. I love the pink suit – as a former Alaskan, by February I was always ready for a pastel outfit – so tired of the dark! I wonder if she wore a fur coat over the suit – she has one that would match this hat. I like the hat – looks warm and soft.

  5. I like the fur calot, but yes, it does blend in with her hair. Overall, though, I think she looks like a promise of spring. 🙂

  6. Two thoughts:

    1. As this page was opening, I saw the top photo and wondered why it was being featured on a royal hat site…I couldn’t see the black hat on her dark hair! That can’t be a good thing!

    2. The hat and suit seem to belong in two different seasons.

  7. Thank you James B! I looked at the hat and thought it was too close to the hair color as well. While I like the suit, I didn’t think it worked with the lace blouse either. I think that blouse, while delicate and a pretty color, would be really hard to wear with a lot of things. If I ignore the blouse, the suit really was very nice and a breath of fresh air in a long, cold winter.

  8. I had the same thought as James B regarding hat/hair color. I like what she’s trying to do here, but I think the outfit needs more hits of the darker color to work-different jewelry perhaps?

  9. I agree with what JamesB says: February 9, 2015 at 3:38 pm. I love the Queen’s suit, though it looks like a spring or summer suit. I also do not get combining a fur hat with a lace blouse. It seems too mixed up for my brain to get.

  10. She does look chic, but I think the colour of the hat’s too close to her hair – can’t see where they each begin and end! That’s a fabulous suit though.
