Crown Princess Mary of Danmark marked the 75th anniversary of the German occupation of Denmark today with a visit to a memorial to this event in Aabenraa.

Princess Mary repeated her grey felt hat with flat crown and upturned ‘slice’ brim. The proportion of this hat has always been beautiful on Mary and I adore the strong shapes of the square crown and diagonal brim. With Mary’s black jacquard tailored coat and dress, the hat adhered to the sombre note of the day’s events while giving the ensemble a light touch.

  1. Elegant as usual, the hat is a gorgeous color on her and yet it;s a bit big for her features. Her outfit is to die for, how beautiful and I love the tailoring look………..perfect. Her make-up, the dress coat, the shoes, that brooch( that I want in my jewel box), the way she moves among the people, so graceful, this is one very beautiful modern lady who just happens to be a princess in waiting.

  2. As always, she is impeccable in manner and dress. When I first saw her in this hat, I thought the hat was elegant, but over powering. She has such fine features, that her face seems to get lost in the size of the hat – in my humble opinion.

  3. Mary, as usual is appropriately dressed and looks poised and modern all at the same time. Wish she would teach a class on this! I agree with the new side bun being worn more and more in order to fit hats better. Is Daisy the only gal who wears her hair in a chignon anymore? Oh, and Mary, I want your brooch!

  4. A very elegant look for Mary. Have always loved this hat and agree with Eliza, the grey keeps the outfit somber, but without overdoing it.

  5. Love the hat, the coat, the hair, the accessories. Princess Mary is perfection. Chic, elegant, beautiful, regal. She will be a wonderful queen some day.

  6. I have always loved this hat. I love how the grey hat keeps this outfit sombre like you say but not as heavy as a black hat would have. She looks so elegant and sophisticated.

I love the embellished hats we see often (the ones with flowers, feathers, bows etc.) but there is something so purely elegant and beautiful about a hat like this that doesn’t have all that noise.

  7. Mary just looks beautiful in her hat. I wonder why the royals have all adopted ponytail-bun on one side. looks a little off balance ce to me.

    • My guess is they favor the one-sided bun because you can place it on the side of the head where the tilted hat sits higher. Even a low bun in the neck can collide with the hat, not such a big problem with a pillbox but a brim will constantly brush over the bun and destroy the smooth finish.

    • As Kat mentioned, the angle of brim on this style hat interferes with a chignon at the back. The side chignon also balances the low brim on the other side.
