Imperial Couple Return Home

The Japanese Emperor and Empress touched down in Tokyo Thursday night after their two day trip to Palau. For their trip home, Empress Michiko wore a new navy saucer hat trimmed with a flat fan bow in navy and gold. The hat perfectly matched the Empress’ navy and gold suit and the gold accent on the bow of the hat echoed the sharp contrast of this fabric on her jacket. While the saucer shape follows all of Michiko’s other hats, the bold colour combination and graphic use of the gold accent is another major departure in her millinery style. I think this is a successful departure and, in a great twist of royal hat fortunes, I can’t wait to see what hat Empress Michiko wears next.

  1. I agree with what Glitter Girl says: April 11, 2015 at 6:09 am, the Empress’s little hats remind me of origami sculpture. They look cute on her, and I like the navy and gold colours combined here.

  2. Love the use of color, although it does remind me a little of an airline stewardess from the 1960s — not that this is bad, since some stewardesses’ uniforms actually used to be rather striking.

  3. It always amazes me to see how Japanese her hats look. Like wonderful origami sculptures. I don’t knwi anyone else who could carry them off without looking ridiculous. But on her, they work.

    • I agree whole heartedly about her hat resembling an origami sculpture – that was a wonderful description. I love this royal couple. They compliment each other in a very loving way.
