Belgian Monarchs in Strasbourg

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium travelled to Strasbourg today to visit the Council of Europe, the Eurocorps and the European Court of Human Rights. Queen Mathilde wore a new calot hat that was clearly bespoke to match her dress- both pieces are made of the same red silk crepe. The three wide pleats that embellish the hat echo the pleats on the left hip of her dress as well. The hat is not a show piece (vibrant colour aside) but I thought it combined with the dress to make an exceptionally elegant and streamlined ensemble. I prefer it to Mathilde’s other pleated red calot hat– what do you think?

  1. I’m not usually a fan of calot hats, but I do like this one and think the whole outfit was very appropriate for the occasion. But I still like the previous red hat she wore better because I prefer the way it was worn as a cocktail hat. As others have said, glad to see she has recovered from her knee injury.

  2. Understated elegance, she is such a graceful lady and this hat is so perfect on her. I love everything about this outfit, the hat (oh how I wish I had that hat in my wardrobe) and her dress is very becoming. Only thing that would make this over the top, it would look great if she had a brooch on her dress to finish the outfit, take a hint from HM Queen Elizabeth who has wonderful brooches. Red is for sure her color, really brightens her features.

  3. Applause for her on this hat — so glad she didn’t wear a French Revolution head of red bandages like she has worn too many times for my taste!

  4. I agree with HatQueen, I also prefer it to Mathilde’s other pleated red calot hat, but I do like both. She definitely suits a calot hat and looks great in all shades of red.

  5. Queen Mathilde looks great, as she always does. I like the hat but it isn’t the sort to draw rave reviews. Still, it’s a hundred times better than the bandage hats, so I’m putting it in the win column.

  6. Glad to see her brace ect. Is gone. That must have been a serious and painful injury. She certainly did not give into it. A tip of the hat to her. What a lovely one along with the dress she is wearing.

  7. Actually, I prefer Queen Matilde’s other red calot, but obviously not with today’s outfit, since today’s is a darker red than the other, pleated hat.
I take it that the Queen is actually still wearing the hat in the fourth and in the last pictures. On the sides from which today’s hat is visible, it looks fine. Glad she’s up and walking.

  8. As always, Queen Mathilde looks chic and classic. She is a wonderful asset to the Belgian monarchy. Red is an excellent colour on her. I am glad to see she was able to discard her crutches and wheelchair. She is a real trooper.

  9. I do love the Belgian royals. She always looks stylish, and I love the color red on her. The hat is really cute. I don’t always care for this style, but HM can wear almost any hat and look amazing. She and the King are hard working, and like the Dutch royals, look very happy and engaged in what they are doing. I would love to see either of those Royal couples in person. Since that isn’t likely to happen, I will be very happy to visit this site and feast my eyes on all the great pictures you provide for us. Thank you for feeding my royal fixation.
