Dutch and Norwegian Royals Open Joint Exhibition

Princess Beatrix joined and Queen Sonja in Oslo yesterday morning to open the exhibition “VanGogh + Munch” at the Munch Museum. For this joint engagement, she wore a charcoal grey metallic hat with flat brim and wide, upright band around the crown. The band gave the hat a slight hourglass shape and neatly concealed a pyramid-shaped crown. Princess Beatrix carries oddly shaped hats better than most but when it comes to these pyramid shaped crowns, I think concealment is best.

Designer: unknown. My guess is Emy Hill
Previously Worn: unconfirmed

Queen Sonja used this occasion to début a new turquoise suit and matching hat. The wool hat, a rounded version of a pillbox, was simply trimmed with a wide monochrome stripe and back bow, presumably in the same fabric as Sonja’s peplum jacket and skirt. I would prefer the lines on this pillbox to be sharper (it’s headed far too close to helmet territory) but the colour is wonderful and I’m happy to see Queen Sonja veer away from her go-to bowlers and cloche hats.

It’s always fun to see joint royal engagements where those involved are clearly enjoying their time together. What did you think of this pair of hats yesterday in Oslo?

  1. I quite like what Queen Sonja is wearing – the colour is divine, a nicely tailored, flattering suit, matching understated hat, scarf at the neck to add a little bit of contrast. I like it.

  2. The hat is exaggerated even for Princess Beatrix, but it makes her instantly recognizable and coordinates perfectly with the whole outfit. By now I don’t know what I’d think if she suddenly wore smaller, more traditionally styled hat.
I like Queen Sonja’s outfit but agree with the JamesB’s pointing out its similarity to stewardesses’ outfits from the 1980s.

  3. I like Queen Sonja’s hat, and I like Princess Beatrix very much, but those awful hats have to go. They are just ugly! She is such a lovely cheerful lady, and I would love to see her in a hat that was pretty and much smaller. I know Queen Mxima has been known to borrow some of Beatrix’s old dresses, so maybe she could lend her some hats. Hats aside, it is always a treat to see these two royal ladies get together, because they seem to have such fun.

  4. Sonja does have a whiff of 80’s air stewardess, but she looks quite funky in that colour. Bea is Classic Bea. Love that these two seem to have so much fun together!

  5. Princess B’s hat belongs in the ‘funny papers’ as we called the comics page when I was a kid in the US.

  6. The turquoise hat is fine.. The black looks like a piece you would play with in a board game. It’s a miss. Hats aside these two royals appear to like each other
