Queen Máxima Opens Nursing Center

This morning, Queen Máxima was in Nieuwolda to officially open a new nursing centre. For the event, she repeated her ringed headpiece in ruched caramel brown straw. The last time we saw this hat, I did not have any love for it; the improved placement on Máxima’s head and the pairing with her more casual green dress make it work so much better. I’m not ready to declare love for these doughnut shaped headpieces but I’ll concede that today, this one worked.

  1. I don’t care much for the earrings, but the main ensemble – dress, hat, shoes – works well enough at what seems to be a relatively informal occasion (if the barefoot wee lass in the official party is anything to go by). What I will point out, though, is another Dutch mayor in a blue suit and brown shoes! Someone commented last time that it’s become a ‘thing’ … I hope it’s a passing fad.

    • Actually, I don’t like the split-sleeve thing on the dress. The left side of the neckline is nice so it’s a shame the designer got all twiddly on the right shoulder.

  2. I’m not sure I could ever like that hat! As someone else said, the netting looks passe. But, in an unrelated vein, does anyone else think Queen Maxima is looking a bit stressed out? That unreal smile, which used to seem to me so natural? I noticed it when she visited here in the US also. Maybe it’s just me–in fact I hope so!

  3. I think the headpiece is dreadful. First of all wrong color. Second, wrong hairdo. Nothing will look good with stringy hair hanging down.

  4. I do not like doughnut hats, but if one is going to wear them, please let them be a color that doesn’t match the hair or ACE bandages.

  5. I love Maxima, but not in this. I didn’t even like the shoes. I still sort of like the hat, but with a different dress and hair style.

  6. Nope. I think this blends in with her hair even more than it did the last time. She should’ve worn the big-brimmed slice hat she has in this color instead. Green is my favorite color and I love seeing it out and about, even if the dress style isn’t my favorite; wonderful to see that little girl knowing what’s up by also wearing green.

    • Love the slice hat but not with a jersey dress like this one. I think this dress would be better off without a hat. And please, get rid of the shoes.

    • I wonder if that Máxima is trying to blend this headpiece with her hair? Since becoming Queen, she has adopted the practice of wearing some sort of hat or headpiece to any official opening she attends- some of these events are pretty informal (as was this one today). I wonder if her collection of hats/headpices in light shades that blend with her hair is a deliberate way to balance wearing a hat with the informality of many such events?

  7. I don’t think I will ever like this hat. It just doesn’t do it. I’m sure it must be comfortable and lightweight for summer engagements, but it’s still a mess. Not sure what I think of the green color on her dress either. I keep going back and forth on it. It is really bright, but on the other hand, the vibrancy and joie de vivre of Queen Maxima carries it off. Love the shoes, but she should lose those awful earrings.

  8. To me the material looks like stiff netting (reminds me of a petticoat I had – and hated – as a little girl). I keep thinking I see shimmer or glitter. I know that is ridiculous but that’s how this hat makes me feel. The dress is somewhat shapeless but I like the colour. The shoes seem more suited to fall or winter, not July. As always, Max’s smile makes every occasion a happy one 🙂

  9. Overall outfit even the shoes look sloppy. Her hair must feel uncomfortable scrapping on her neck and shoulders . Mine does when I wear it at that length. Looks like she got dressed way too fast. Too bad.

  10. Nope! Not going for it still – don’t think I ever will. Today the fabric used on it reminds me of the Christmas tree skirt I used in my Americana decorating phase in the 80s – my tree was nestled in natural burlap.
