Danish Royal Couple on Summer Cruise

Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik of Denmark set off on their annual summer cruise this week. On Tuesday, they visited Southdjurs Municipality. For their arrival into the port of Ebeltoft, the Queen repeated her vibrant blue blue hat with pork pie crown and downward curved brim. My favourite part of this piece is the striped velvet band around the crown which adds such depth and dimension to the very blue ensemble.

On Wednesday, the royal couple sailed on to Vejle. Queen Margrethe repeated her straw hat made from close and open weaves of red straw. We have seen this hat many times but its casual feel and perfect compliment to nautical navy makes it just the right hat for a royal cruise.

Today, Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik concluded the trip with a visit to Aabenraa. For this stop, the Queen repeated her pale blue bumper hat with braided trim. After wearing it frequently last year (enough that I grew tired of it), this was this hat’s first 2015 outing and I was pleasantly surprised to see her wear it again. It’s a great colour and scale for her.

The hats worn on this year’s cruise feel more formal to me than those worn in years past. Perhaps the scheduled events carried more formality? Nevertheless, the two blue hats worn this week are two of the best in Queen Margrethe’s millinery closet and one can never go with classic navy and red when one is sailing. Good choices all around, I think, although I desperately hope we’ll soon see a few new hats for the Danish Queen. It’s time.

  1. Sorry ahead of time if I am breaking a rule, but I couldn’t help but notice the photo of the woman pointing at the Queen’s flowers. Are they real? Are they straw? The bouquet is stunning and something I have not seen before. Some would look pretty as millinery pieces.

    • An occasional trip down a rabbit hole is fine! I didn’t notice the flowers when I posted this initially but now, it looks like they are made of paper! Perhaps that’s what is being pointed out. You’re right- they would be fantastic trim on a hat!

  2. I reckon Queen Margarethe’s best look of the three hats here is the first hat. It’s one of my favorites, and she has worn it quite a lot. She really carries that hard-to-wear-on-anyone-else electric blue color well, and her hat is simple but elegant, and the simple trim of the striped velvet band around the crown is just right, and proves the old adage that less is more! The red hats suits her well also. The red and navy combination is just right for a cruise. This hat is my second favorite. Third is the final hat. I like the pale blue bumper hat with braided trim, and this color is great on her, but I find this hat tends to leave her looking like she is going bald. It is just not the right hat for her I reckon.

  3. While I think Queen Margrethe tends to get her wear out of her hats, I, too, think she needs to add more hats in her millinery closet. While CP Mary is younger, I think her mother-in-law needs to observe how Mary recycles her hats.

  4. I don’t know how you manage to think of new things to say about Marge’s hats! She’s fabulous and all, but really, as you say, she does need to go shopping! QEII tends to go up to about 6 outings max per outfit (and over about 10 years it would seem), which strikes me as a good way to reuse but not be constantly seen in the same thing. Margrethe clearly know what she likes, but I can’t help thinking some new titfers would be most welcome!
