Mikasa Princess Attends Self Defence Awards

Princess Akiko of Mikasa attended the 13th annual People’s Self-Defense Officials Awards today in Tokyo to honor distinguished service in the Self-Defence Forces of Japan. For this event, she wore a new cloche style hat in grey felt with sharply upturned brim on one side. Cloche hats are not usually associated with dramatic shapes and the treatment of this brim sets this hat apart. While I would have preferred a more exciting colour, the shape of this piece works well on Akiko and her bobbed hairstyle.

  1. Princess Akiko looks so beautiful and Imperial here. This is the best hat she has ever worn I think, and one of the best hats any Imperial Princess has ever worn. The shape is amazing, and works well with her bobbed hairdo. I like the grey color on her. It tones well with her black hair. She has some excellent jewels too, and the pearls coordinate well with the light grey color tones.

  2. Wow! This is the most stylish she’s ever looked. I do wish the Japanese Royal ladies would experiment more with their hats at the very least.

  3. I love the design of the hat (very bold) and her suit jacket (what we can see). But everything is so structured — the matching hat and suit, the white gloves, the non-smiling face.

  4. An all-dove grey outfit can be a bit boring, but Akiko livens it up with this great hat! I love the design of it and am glad it’s a departure from a majority of the hats we see on her and other Japanese princesses. Definitely a winner that must be repeated!

  5. From this only picture we have….I think this young lady looks FAB! So different, so cute, so playful and totally hip. Love it and because of its quirky and unexpected appearance, I don’t even mind the colour. Nice.
