Queen Máxima Celebrates Moluccan Community

Queen Máxima attended in the 50th anniversary of the the Moluccan community  in Alphen aan den Rijn today. For this celebration, she repeated her brown camel vagabond style hat with grosgrain ribbon tied in a multi-looped bow at the base of the hat’s crown. The informal nature of the hat was a good match for this particular event and made a chic addition to her tan and grey dress and coat.

Hats From the Past

Royal Hats to Prinsjesdag in 1962. Queen Juliana (middle) delivered the speech from the throne and was joined on the balcony by husband Princer Bernhard and daughters Princess Beatrix, Princess Irene and Princess Margriet. Their hats are such classic pieces from the time, aren’t they?!

Dutch Royals Celebrate Prinsjesdag 2015

Today was Prinsjesdag in the Netherlands, the start of a new session of Dutch parliament. King Willem-Alexander, who addressed a joint session of the Dutch Senate and House of Representatives, was joined in The Hague by Queen Máxima, Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien. As per tradition, the women wore 18th century court dress (long gowns and hats). Queen Máxima’s dress had an interestingly royal connection, as it was inspired by the Japanese Room at Palace Huis ten Bosch. Designed by Jan Taminiau, the gown was made of palest sandy pink silk organza and featured flowers and birds that were painted, beaded and embroidered by hand.

The exquisite gown was topped with a coordinating headpiece of embroidered silk flowers that encircled Máxima’s head in a floral wreath. It is a smaller headpiece than Máxima usually wears for Prinsjesdag but the delicate scale and design of the piece perfectly complimented her dress.

Princess Laurentien wore a Hardies Couture gown with cape sleeves in vibrant green chevron printed Missoni sweater knit balanced by a netural cocktail hat. The hat’s sinamay beret base was covered in a finely woven layer of gold French tulle that made the piece faintly shine and sparkle. The hat was trimmed in two parabuntal straw twists that gave the small hat a wonderful sense of space and movement. It’s a fantastic hat for Laurentien and it provided some much needed grounding to her dress.

Prinsjesdag usually brings us some memorable fashion and I thought the millinery this year did not disappoint. What are your thoughts, dearest readers, on these two new pieces?

Swedish Royals Attend Opening Of Parliament

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden were joined by their children this morning for the Opening of Parliament. The day’s events began with an interdenominational service at the Church of St. Nicholas which was followed by the opening ceremony of the new Swedish parliamentary session held at the Riksdagen in Stockholm. In keeping with tradition, the royal family adhered to a black and white dress code. Queen Silvia wore the white felt calot hat with small feather trim at the back that we first saw her wear earlier this year for Swedish National Day celebrations.

Designer: unknown. My guess is Kerstin Carlefalk.
Previously Worn: June 8, 2015

Princess Victoria wore a headpiece of overlayed black and white butterflies of different sizes. At first glance, I thought it was a repeat of the headpiece she wore to this same event one year ago ( a similar stacked black and white bow) but this one, while equally twee, is different.

Designer: Malinda Damgaard
Previously Worn: I believe this headpiece is new.

Princess Madeleine, who popped over from her new home in London for the event, wore a felt percher cocktail hat trimmed in black feathers and a large silk bloom. We have not seen Madeleine wear a hat for a long time and I thought this piece looked very sophisticated on her and worked wonderfully with her upswept hair.

Designer: unconfirmed. Maybe Philip Treacy?
Previously Worn: This hat is new

Princess Sofia anchored her chignon with another black fascinator made up of straw leaves and curling feathers. Sofia wears the piece well and I suppose, is taking a gentle approach to building her millinery wardrobe. Hopefully, we’ll see her in a brimmed hat, soon.

The black and white dress code at this event creates elegantly unified fashion for the Swedish royals. My favourite hat, by great surprise, was the one worn by Princess Madeleine. Which one was your favourite?
