Princess Beatrix Celebrates King William Fund Milestone

Princess Beatrix of The Netherlands joined celebrations for the 140th anniversary of the King William Fund yesterday at the Dutch Church in London. For this event, she repeated her tall crowned hat in black and gold layered straw. The closeup photo below shows a greater view of this hat than we have previously seen – the textural effect created from laying the two colours of straw is subtle but gives such visual interest to this piece. The proportion of this hat (which I questioned on its last outing) works well with the wide lapels and sleeves on Beatrix`s coat and the entire ensemble is balanced. It’s not my favourite colour palace on the princess but she does wear it well.

Hat From The Past

Royal Hats Not to a hat per se, but a lace veil. 52 years ago today, Princess Alexandra of Kent chose head to toe (plus a 21 foot train) lace for her wedding ensemble.  It`s a LOT of lace but this statuesque royal bride carried it well.

Timeless or Trendy?

Royal Hats  During our recent look back at the wedding of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall which took place 10 years ago, a number of hats seemed very ‘stuck’ in the millinery fashion trends of the day. While our comments now reflected widespread disfavour for these styles, I remember them being greatly admired for their stylishness back in 2005.

This makes me wonder, dear readers- do you prefer royal hats to be stylish in the moment or able to remain relevant over time? Are you drawn to royal hats that are trendy or timeless? And why? Let’s discuss.

Birthday of Queen Elizabeth

Royal HatsOne of our favourite royal hat wearers, Queen Elizabeth, celebrates her 89th birthday today. As we do on royal birthdays, we are going to surround our best wishes for Her Majesty with suggestions of hats we would most like to see her repeat in the coming year. After intense deliberation, my pick is her famous Wedgewood inspired hat in porcelain blue with white lace trim. I love the delicate feel of this hat,  its classic simplicity and its perfect shade of blue. Since it hasn’t been seen in public for nearly a year, I think it’s high time for another outing. What hat would you like to see the Queen repeat this year?

Belgian Monarchs in Strasbourg

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium travelled to Strasbourg today to visit the Council of Europe, the Eurocorps and the European Court of Human Rights. Queen Mathilde wore a new calot hat that was clearly bespoke to match her dress- both pieces are made of the same red silk crepe. The three wide pleats that embellish the hat echo the pleats on the left hip of her dress as well. The hat is not a show piece (vibrant colour aside) but I thought it combined with the dress to make an exceptionally elegant and streamlined ensemble. I prefer it to Mathilde’s other pleated red calot hat– what do you think?
