Milestone Birthday: Countess of Wessex

Royal HatsThe Countess of Wessex (née Sophie Rhys-Jones) celebrated her 50th birthday yesterday.  In honour of this milestone event, we are going to look back at her royal life through her hats.

Sophie’s bold and daring hat style dates from the time she joined the British royal family in 1999. During the first three years of her royal life, Sophie’s hats made strong statements- the crowns were tall, the shapes were exaggerated and the embellishments were not held back.

By 2003, Sophie had established a strong relationship with Irish milliner Philip Treacy. For the next seven years, her hats were primarily Treacy designs and this partnership saw Sophie push the boundaries of her millinery style with more dramatic shapes and gigantic embellishments. It was during this time that she cemented herself as a major player in the world of royal hats.

In 2008, the Countess of Wessex wore a navy straw pillbox hat by Rachel Trevor Morgan to church on Christmas Day. This hat was a significant departure in style from the hats she had worn the previous decade and marked the beginning of a style change. This change in millinery style continued over the next two years with Sophie wearing several more Morgan designs.

In late 2010, the Countess of Wessex  began working with British milliner Jane Taylor and this partnership has yielded most memorable results. While Sophie’s hat style in this new era has remained strong and very dramatic (and continued experimentation with different hat shapes), there is now an underlying confidence with which she carries these hats. It seems that with Jane Taylor, Sophie has hit her hat-wearing stride.

It’s no surprise that the Countess of Wessex was one of your top picks for best overall royal hat style in 2014. What is it about her millinery style that you love most?  Which hat would you most like to see Sophie repeat this year?

Princess Kiko Opens Hospital

Princess Kiko officially opened the new Aiiku Hospital in Tokyo today. The hospital, which is administered by the Association for Maternal/Child Health & Welfare of which Princess Kiko is president, originally opened in 1938. For this event, Princess Kiko wore a new fabric covered bumper hat which coordinated with her lime suit. It is not the most exciting of royal hats but Kiko certainly wears this bright shade of green well, doesn’t she?

Birthday of Queen Mathilde

Royal Hats January 20 is the birthday of two prominent royal women- the Countess of Wessex and Queen Mathilde of Belgium. While we’re going to celebrate the Countess of Wessex’s milestone birthday in depth  tomorrow, I didn’t want the day to pass without sharing our best wishes for Queen Mathilde on her 42nd birthday today.

Queen Mathilde has worn some very bold hats during her royal life (some are reviewed at this post) and it was difficult for me to choose one piece I would like to see return into circulation. My final choice is a quirky, creative and unique piece that surprised me when Mathilde first wore it in July 2009. It’s not a hat for the faint of heart and that makes me love Mathilde for being brave enough to wear it. I would love to see it brought out for another outing in 2015.

What hat would you like Queen Mathilde to bring back this year?

The Winners: Best Overall Royal Hat Style in 2014

Royal HatsAfter looking at all the royal hats we saw in 2014, you, dearest readers, narrowed down your choice for the royal with best overall millinery style to just five candidates. While the race for second, third and fourth place was very tight, our winner ran away with the category (and with our hat loving hearts, I expect!), I’m pleased to share the results as follows:

5 The Duchess of Cambridge

And your  1 choice for best overall royal hat style last year was…

Queen Máxima! While some of Queen Máxima’s hats topped your list of least favourites last year, the overall contents of her millinery closet remain so popular with royal hat watchers that she easily won this category. Several of you commented about her fearless, risk-taking approach to millinery (which accounts for her hats topping our favourite and least favourite lists) and noted how exciting it is for us spectators to see what she will wear next. I’m sure that you all join me in eagerly looking forward to what hat surprises Máxima has in store for us this year!

One of these lovely royal ladies celebrated a milestone birthday today- check back tomorrow afternoon for a look back at some of her many fantastic hats.

Monaco Royals Attend International Circus Festival

The 39th International Monte-Carlo Circus Festival is began late last week in Monaco. On Sunday, Princess Stephanie attended the festival with her two daughters, Pauline and Camille. Camille wore a black faux fur papakha style hat. With her black and white outfit and large black rectangular earrings, the effect was… well, let’s just say she fit in well with the event.

While I’m not sure I can count this hat a success, it is always exciting to welcome another royal hat wearer to the blog! It’s wonderful to see that Camille has not followed her mother’s approach to hat wearing (remember this?) and I hope this is the first of many more hats we will see from her.
