Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden welcomed a healthy baby boy yesterday. The birth of Prince Oscar Carl Olof was celebrated this morning with a traditional Te Deum mass in the chapel of the Royal Palace in Stockholm. For this event, Queen Silvia wore a royal blue suit topped with a black straw headpiece that circled round the crown of her head. While I’m not a fan of open crown pieces, this headpiece looks great on Silvia (from the front!) and was an excellent compliment to her patterned suit.
While Princess Madeleine did not wear a hat, Princess Sofia topped her grey dress with a new coordinating calot trimmed with floral lace appliqué and a birdcage veil, designed by Malinda Damgaard. The colour contrast is lovely against Sofia’s dark hair and made for a very polished ensemble.
Countess Maryanne Bernadotte (below, far right) wore an ecru hat with cuff brim and tulle net veil trim. This hat seems a little slouchy and informal from far away but I’ll reserve full judgement until we can get a closer look.
Prince Daniel’s mother and sister both wore neutral toned fascinators. I can’t imagine it is easy for non-royals to dress for shared-family royal occasions such as this and these pieces fit the bill.
Undoubtedly, this was a happy celebration for the family and I’m sure you’ll all join me in extending heartfelt congratulations to Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel and big sister Princess Estelle on the safe arrival of the wee prince.

Royal Hats 
Princess Sofia’s grey dress with a coordinating calot was my favourite here, and she certainly knows how to do maternity chic. I just wish she had styled her hair in a chignon for even more elegance! Queen Silvia’s royal blue suit was a good colour choice, and I think it’s a shame she didn’t echo this colour in her hat. Prince Daniel’s mother and sister both wore attractive fascinators but I wish they had hidden the attaching bands in their hair. Countess Maryanne Bernadotte’s hat wasn’t well-photographed, but the ecru colour looks rather dull and the slouchiness of the hat looks too casual for church.
Sofi’a hat is lovely, but I do think it would have looked better with her hair in a different fashion, perhaps an undo or a chignon.

It’s so hard to see Queen Silvia’s hat. While the black is appropriate with her lovely suit, I wish the hat had been blue, or trimmed in blue so that we could see it.
I think Princess Sofia wins this hat occasion. It’s a nice little hat but I agree with Jake that it could have worked better as a percher (I’m not normally a percher fan, but this one is almost falling off the back of her head.) PSofia looks lovely — which is quite an accomplishment at 8.5 months along!
Prince Daniel’s mum and sister look quite nice in their fascinators, but I wish they had nestled the bands in their hair.
Off topic, but Prince Daniel’s father is CERY good looking, what IS Princess Madeline wearing on her feet & I’d love to see her necklace more closely, love the simple formality of it all.
Not a fan of Silvia’s hat this time; open crown and basically the same color as her hair? Not good; I did like her outfit though. I also like Sofia’s new hat, but I wonder if it would’ve looked better as a percher on the front of her head (which I personally prefer over the back-of-the-head position); also feel rather stupid that I wasn’t aware she was also expecting a child (always the last to know everything haha). Interesting and disappointing that Madeleine went hatless. Looks like standard stuff from Countess Maryanne, but she looked quite nice nevertheless. I think Daniel’s mother’s headpiece worked very well with her hairstyle. Daniel’s sister’s fascinator was the winner out of all of these for me because it’s a nice piece and she wears it wonderfully.
These are quite nice, although I can’t help but think of it as rather a waste of a wonderful opportunity to wear “proper hats”! I know it may not be their style, but if they’d gone in for something more substantial on such an occasion, no-one would have wondered at it.
I liked Queen Silvia’s suit and headpiece, in this photograph but I don’t like crownless hats. Princess Sofia looked good in her grey dress with a coordinating calot hat and I commend her decision to trim it in floral lace appliqué and a birdcage veil.
I highly doubt it was Princess Sofia’s decision to trim the hat this way- let’s give credit to her milliner!
Prince Daniel’s mother and sister looked lovely. Very suitable hats for both of them. I’m fond of Princess Sophia but her outfit and hat for this occasion didn’t impress me. I do believe, however, that little Princess Estelle stole the show with her cuteness.
Sofia’ s hat is darling! It looks so cute on the side of her head! I also thought Daniel’s sister’s fascinator looked nice. I do not like the open crown hats either. Sylvia’ s blended in with her hair I could barely see it in the above pictures. Too bad there were not any more hats to talk about. 😦
Princess Sofia looks fabulous, but then I’m fond of veils. I agree with your comment that it’s lovely contrasted with her dark hair. Soon we’ll hear of her delivery. Lots of cousins to play together! And, of course, hopefully future hats!

I so look forward to these posts for a really good look at events like this. This wasn’t an outstanding hat event for sure, but a very happy time nonetheless for everyone attending. As I remarked to my husband, when you are awaiting a Te Deum, you have to be ready with your outfit at any moment! Perhaps not everyone had time to find a hat.
They have known about this event for nearly nine months! But I would be in a real flap because I have NEVER found a hat that suits me…
