Since this is our last open post (I’ll be back on Wednesday), I saved a corker of a hat to accompany it. On this day in 1970, Princess Anne was touring Australia and chose this John Boyd design to wear to a garden party in Brisbane. With its spherical crown and perching bird on the brim, it’s a most memorable piece. In the hundreds (thousands?) of royal hats we’ve discussed here at Royal Hats, few hold a candle to this.
Please share current royal goings on (especially the hats!) in the comments below and I look forward to getting back to our regular schedule of posts on Wednesday!

So you want to be king? Let’s talk.
You busy this weekend? Let’s go to Vegas…
That’s it for your annual salary? You should get an agent and join the movie business, man.
Hairy and Harry: homophone or synonym?
Sure, I can get you a light sabre if you set me up on a date with Pippa.
It is good to meet a fellow pilot.
My friend just sent me this photo of Princess Beatrice and her boyfriend. She looks great.

Early birthday celebration today? Beautiful.

To me, it looks more like an insect than a bird. Pretty hat, though.
Given her practical penchant for recycling, I am surprised that Princess Anne hasn’t re-attached that perching bird to other, more recently worn hats. The bird’s a perfect addition for a garden party. .
This is a good opportunity too for Angela Kelly to get her glue gun ready: she could attach this bird so that its beak goes right into one of the big flowers at the front of one of Queen Elizabeth’s hats.

Thank you, Aberdeen, for the second angle of the John Boyd hat. Love the style and it suits Princess Anne. I’m personally not taken with the bird perched on it!

Anne often wore this style with the large rounded crown in the 1960s and 1970s. Could any of these reappear??
Killer hats! On the last picture, the yellow one, is the black ribbon hanging down in the rear?

Some more to enjoy, from the same era.

PS HatQueen, we have a lot of catching up to do on Wednesday.
PSS 90 candles on one cake will be awesome!
PSSS I am GREEN with envy, that you can take such a lovely extended break!
Dear Lord, from this angle it looks like one of these freaky giant wasps from Japan – complete with stinger! She’s lucky no-one attacked her with a bottle of Raid. That’s as bad as Queen Maxima’s Spider brooches (or as good depending on your stance on giant insects and possible phobias).
Thank you for this clearer photograph Aberdeen says: April 18, 2016 at 6:43 am. It looks like a killer wasp to me, not a bird! Those enormous crowns are not to my personal taste, but the Princess Royal seems to have the ability to pull off these over-the-top hats!
I don’t remember ever seeing this hat before. It is very different than what I am used to seeing on her, and a fun departure. Not a hat I would wear, but she looks very nice in it.
Wow. Does anyone know what color this hat was?
It’s 1970; the world was still black and white!
I believe it was a dark green hat but hat queen may be able to clarify this on Wednesday. She wore some lovely hats on this tour. Does anyone know if any were ever repeated ?
