Seen It Before: Queen Elizabeth’s Somerville Swirls

Royal HatsLast year, Queen Elizabeth surprised us by repeating a black and white hat by Philip Somerville with distinctive crown in white swirled silk.

Many of you will remember a similar hat with swirled crown the Queen wore several years ago, also by Somerville, in softest petal pink.

These, however, are not the only two swirled crown hats that Philip Somerville made for Her Majesty. If you go back a decade, you’ll see an even earlier version

Visit of Queen Elizabeth II in France

I find it fascinating to see Somerville’s experiments with this shape from the earlier hat to the later ones. I suspect most of us will prefer the later hats but I have great appreciation for the earlier one as well. Looking at this group I’m left with admiration for Queen Elizabeth’s millinery bravery- while some royals find a particular hat style and stick to it for decades (or more!), she has has continued experimenting with different shapes and styles of hats. Thanks to the immense creativity of her milliners, hers is truly an evolution of style.

Luxembourg Royals Celebrate Octave

On Sunday, members of the Luxembourg royal family attended annual celebrations around the closing of the Octave of Our Lady of Luxembourg. While not as well attended as in past years, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa and Heredity Grand Duchess Stéphanie both attended the event. The Grand Duchess wore a streamlined pillbox hat covered in black silk. While the hat is very simple, it worked beautifully with her colour blocked dress and coat and Maria Teresa looked great.

Princess Stéphanie topped her taupe and silver brocade coat in a taupe straw percher hat. The beret-based piece is trimmed with a large double bow and there appears to be metallic threads woven in the straw, giving it a subtle bit of shimmer. It’s a sweet hat that I think would have been much improved if Stéphanie had worn it a little higher up on her head. As placed here, it looks milliseconds away from falling off.

Some of you might be interested to note that the brilliant girls over at Luxarazzi recognized this hat as the same one worn by Princess Tessy to this event back in 2012 (with the slight rearrangement of the bow tail on the left!). I think Tessy’s placement of this piece was much more successful.

Birthday Celebration Of Swedish King: Royal Guests

Celebrations for King Carl Gustaf’s 70th birthday over the weekend also included attendance by representatives from numerous royal houses. Queen Margrethe led the Danish contingent (she and the Swedish King are first cousins) in the same mint green wool crepe hat that she first wore for her own birthday last year. It’s a great hat on her and the interesting shape of this hat’s bumper brim makes it a continued success for me

Princess Benedikte topped her pale aqua coat with a hat in coffee coloured straw that featured a slightly upturned brim on one side. The hat is trimmed with a giant silk bloom on the side that looks very close to the one on this other hat.

Crown Princess Mary repeated her marvellous purple pillbox hat with side feather trim. It’s a wonderful hat on her that was again, styled beautifully with her camel coat. In the last photo below, she is pictured with Icelandic First Lady Dorritt Moussaieff who wore a white felt hat with wide, upturned brim that was filled with silk flower petals.

One of the most interesting hats of the day was worn by Princess Hisako of Takamado. The design featured a flat, rounded crown in covered in yellow silk, wrapped with a wide yellow silk band and trimmed with a multi-looped bow at the side. The centrepiece of the hat is undoubtedly its brim, made of accordion folded straw piped in yellow. Those of us who follow millinery worn by the Imperial royals will appreciate just how bold and out-of-the-box this design is; while it might carry a 1980s soap opera vibe, it’s so out there that I have to love Princess Hisako for it.

Update: The reason this hat has an 1980s vibe is because it dates back to 1997!

Princess Beatrix wore a hat in one of her signature shapes with a tall, upfolded bumper brim and flat, stacked crown. The burgundy straw used for this piece has a glamorous shimmer that, when paired with her snakeskin printed tunic and skirt (not to mention that divine cape), makes for a knock-out ensemble. Isn’t this Dutch Princess is looking her best?!

Speaking of glamour…Princess Märtha Louise glittered in a metallic lace dress topped with a fascinator in pale pink layered feathers and a net tulle veil.

Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia, pictured below right, wore a calot hat in cafe-au-lait coloured straw trimmed with feathers and a net tulle veil in the same colour. As you can also see below, Queen Sofia of Spain and Queen Margarita of Bulgaria (as well as Crown Princess Margarita of Romania in the lower photo) did not wear hats.

Finally, Princess Ursula of Bavaria was spotted in small cocktail hat with a pheasant feather covered base and trimmed with a navy double bow and dotted net tulle veil.

UPDATE: Thanks to blogger Hovikirjeenvaihtaja and reader Avery for hunting down this photos of Princess Anna of Bavaria and Hereditary Princess Kelly of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha who wore hats afterall! Princess Anna topped her blue suit with a navy beret-based percher hat trimmed with a large sunburst of red feathers on the side. Seated next to Anna in the photo below is Duchess Elizabeth of Bavaria who is sporting a pale blue fascinator or curling straw ribbon and silk blooms.

Princess Kelly wore my favourite fascinator at this event, a mass of intertwined, curling straw ribbons swathed in a bubble of coordinating dotted net tulle veil.

That wraps up coverage of King Carl Gustaf’s 70th birthday celebration! Amidst this wonderful parade of royal hats, which ones were your favourites?

My sincere thanks to Sofia Svanholm for granting permission to share her excellent photos. Do peek at her blog and gallery of photos of this event as both are very well done.

Birthday Celebration Of Swedish King: Extended Family

It was no surprise that birthday celebrations for King Carl Gustaf this weekend included attendance by members of the extended Swedish Royal Family, many of whom wore hats and headpieces for the daytime events.

Princess Christina topped her blue jacquard suit with a feathered flower fascinator in the same hue. It’s not the most exciting of headpieces (I suppose it does have a festive vibe that fits well with this celebration) although the colour is lovely against her hair.

Princess Christina’s three daughter-in-laws all wore cocktail percher hats. Emma Magnuson (seen above and below) chose a grey straw beret based piece with multiple bow loops and a soaring ribbon tail that coordinated with her grey lace skirt. Frida Bergström (below right) topped her floral dress with a white-rimmed grey saucer hat trimmed in silk roses while Vicky Magnuson (lower photo) wore a pale pink cocktail hat with beret base trimmed with a large bow and net tulle veil. Although the pink hat errs on the saccharine side of the spectrum, I thought it was a light and airy compliment to her navy dress.

Princess Birgitte, who I can’t remember wearing a hat in a very long time, surprised in this round grey percher design. With sharp white piping and a bedazzled button anchoring two large feather spines, the hat is bold and decidedly modern. I’m not sure grey was the best colour for Princess Birgitte but I’m going to ignore this quibble since she’s actually in a hat.

Princess Birgitte’s daughter, Désirée von Bohlen und Halbach, photographed below with her mother and aunts, wore a pale taupe fascinator of straw and silk bow loops trimmed with feathers.

The King’s other two sisters, Princess Margaretha and Princess Désirée (seen above in the yellow dress), did not wear hats for this event. His aunt, Countess Marianne Bernadotte of Wisborg, attended in a gold brocade suit that she paired with an elaborate fascinator. Made up of large silk blooms and arrow trimmed gold feathers, the piece topped off a wonderfully regal and rather luxurious ensemble.

Finally, Maline Sommerlath (wife of Queen Silvia’s nephew Patrick Sommerlath), wore an ecru straw fascinator made up of multiple bows and coordinating feather trim. The amazing pleated yellow and white hat worn by Princess Hisako of Takamado is something we’ll discuss more in the next post as we look at the hats worn by royal guests.

While none of the King’s extended family wore pieces as large or dramatic as his wife and daughters, this group includes some lovely pieces. Which ones here stand out to you?
Special thanks to Sofia Svanholm for giving permission to sharing her fantastic photos of this event. I encourage you to peek at her blog and gallery of photos taken this weekend.

Birthday of Princess Charlotte

Royal HatsI’m interrupting coverage of this weekend`s royal celebrations in Sweden to share photos of a certain wee princess who turns one today. Kensington Palace released four photos for this occasion, all taken by the Duchess of Cambridge. The blue and pink hair bows (notice the match between bow and shoes in the third photo) are deliciously adorable, aren’t they?
