Christening of Prince of Bourbon Parma

Prince Carlos and Princess Annemarie of Bourbon Parma hosted numerous events in Piacenza and Parma, Italy this weekend in celebration of their son’s christening. At a mass on Saturday held at Santa Maria della Steccata Basilica, Prince Carlos officially ‘showed’ little Prince Carlos Enrique to the people of Piacenza. For this event, Princess Annemarie topped a draped blue chiffon dress with a twisted white silk headpiece.

For the christening yesterday, Princess Annemarie chose a dress and cocktail hat in a deeper shade of blue. The hat features a beret base trimmed with a large flat bow and swath of crin that encircles most of the design like a sort of flying brim. It’s a lovely colour on Annemarie but the near vertical placement was awkward- I would have much preferred to see this piece placed up and forward, perched down over her hairline on the right side of her forehead.

Queen Máxima used this occasion to debut a new hat with interesting history. During her June 10 visit to Urk, local milliner Hoedenhuis Kaptein gave it to her as a gift.

While we don’t often see gifted items wore publicly, Queen Máxima surprised yesterday by wearing this hat. In pale grey straw, this design features an intended crown and slightly curved brim; it is trimmed with a white hat band and small grey bow at the side with trailing tails. I really like the strong shape of this piece on Máxima – we see so many repeated shapes on her and it’s wonderful to see something completely different- and think it could be a great design for her but I’m not sure its pairing with her delicate teal lace Dolce & Gabbana dress showed the hat to its best. I think this is an occasion where the individual pieces of this ensemble work better separately than they do together.

Princess Viktoria was the only other member of the Bourbon Parma family in millinery of any description, a small pink fascinator floral pouf made from heat shaped petals. The scale feels too small for her and it’s far too twee for my liking, particularly in combination with her clunky heart shaped necklace.

It is always lovely to see hats at this type of royal family event, even though I would have liked small tweaks on each of the ensembles we saw yesterday. Did any hats here stand out to you? And what do you think about Queen Máxima wearing a gifted piece?

  1. Just discovered your website and love it. Thank you. I am always on the look out for how ladies of my age group dress and hats that look great. The lady is not wearing any headgear as far as I can tell but please could you identify who is on the right of the photo with Maxima and family wearing a dress with pale blue lace and deeper blue skirt. X

    • Welcome here! I hope you’ll join in the conversation!

The person you inquire about it Princess Irene of the Netherlands- mother of Prince Carlos of Bourbon Parma (grandmother of the baby christened here) and younger sister of Princess Beatrix (formerly Queen Beatrix) of the Netherlands. That makes her the aunt of King Willem-Alexander.

  2. I love hat and dress combo on Queen Max. The soft lace dress with the strong straight-lined hat as well as the color combination is a hit. Just that bit different. Perfect hair updo: major bonus. Nice to see King WA on baby duty, several babies, totlers, kids & teenagers and generally everyone being happy and family-ish. Honorable mentioning: princess Irene is (this time unhatted but) always very elegant and stylish.

  3. I love Queen Maxima’s hat and think the dress she wore it with works perfectly, primarily because she pulled them together with accessories and that fabulous string of Tahitian black baroque pearls and Tahitian black pearl earrings.

  4. Out of the two ensembles for Annemarie, I think the first one with the white headpiece was more successful; I personally prefer the blue cocktail hat and dress, but I agree the placement on the head should be more at a 45 degree angle closer to her forehead. The blue is really a beautiful hat.

I personally loved Máxima’s hat and dress pairing. I agree it’s nice to see a different shape on her, and it really shows how much she cares about the people that she wore a hat gifted to her (I can’t see any other royals beyond the Dutch doing something like this).

Viktoria’s fascinator looks more like a child’s embellished headband and not actually a proper fascinator.

  5. I am sorry but am I the only one that thinks Queen Maxima’s hat looks dated? When I first saw a small low resolution photo on another blog I assumed it was an old photo from an event 10 or more years ago, so was surprised when I realised it was from a recent event. But agree it is a vast improvement on the bandage hat!

    • I noticed that as well (I think we saw it on the same blog). Although in the video where it’s presented to her, it’s quite striking. I think in these better photos, the hat is quite lovely and I would love to see her wear it with a trouser suit.

  6. The only hat I like is the queen’s new gift, but not with the teal dress. The more casual hat with the delicate lace looks at odds together, IMO.
The new one with the nice hairdo sure beats her bandage over the stringy hair when she received it! (see the video)

  7. The baby is darling, and the little Dutch princesses were so sweet and nicely turned out. I really liked Maxima’s new hat, and I thought Princess Anne Marie’s headpiece looked okay from the front, not so great from the side. Not a great day for hats other than the Queen’s new one. That one is a keeper.

  8. I’m not very impressed with any of the hats, so will only comment on the dresses. I think I like the Princess of a Bourbon Parma’s pale blue dress. Cute baby and darling smocked dresses on the little girls.
Queen Maxima’s dark teal lace dress is gorgeous.
