Crown Princess Masako of Japan was photographed arriving at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo yesterday, no doubt for a special visit on the occasion of her birthday. She wore a new hat in pale blue silk jacquard with a square crown and short bumper style brim. The stark lines of the design contrast interestingly with the draped neckline of her dress, particularly as the two pieces are made of the same fabric. The small hat is a typical scale for Imperial royal hats and while I’d prefer something a little larger, it does allow us fans to focus on Masako’s face. It’s so good to see her looking so well.

I too wish her a special birthday and I hope she is well and happy! She looks beautiful!
I don’t think I’ve seen jacquard used on a hat. It finishes the hat off nicely.
What was her illness? I think she looks lovely in this icy blue color!

Lovely! And, Happy Birthday to the Crown Princess.
Masako looks absolutely wonderful here! The ice blue and the subtle pattern are gorgeous, and I enjoy the way the fabric is draped around her collar. That shape is quite standard, but with the color and material it stands out, and I much prefer Masako in hats with her hair down like it is here. Wishing the Crown Princess a most happy birthday, and many more to come!
I would love to see her break out with a sharp little side slice or perhaps a giant flip aka HRH Princess Michael of Kent.
But Happy Birthday to her. I hope she is happy.
The royal family definitely do not veer very far from the tradition style of hat that they wear.
Yes, it is lovely to see her more often these days. It certainly took her a long time to get well. Love this hat on her – in fact, I love the whole outfit, but especially those pearls! I bet they’re Mikimoto.
It is so lovely to see her out and about more often these days. I hope she is happier. She has such a beautiful smile.
Yes, well within the usual constraints, but they are elegant constraints. She does look very well. Happy birthday to her, indeed.
