The Swedish royal family celebrated their country’s national holiday today with all of the royal ladies in folk costume with traditional white cotton folded hats.

Princess Estelle also joined in the festivities in a braided headband in Sweden’s national colours.

Princess Christina’s daughter-in-law, Vicky Andren Magnusson, was spotted at a related equestrian event in a beige straw hat with triple pleated straw hatband and side bow, studded with feathers in the same shade. Her young daughter Désirée wore a sweet natural straw hat with multicoloured pompom studded hatband.

Royal Hats 
Everyone looks great for National Day! I like the blue and yellow of the outfits and I especially love the headband on Estelle. I would love to see what a man’s national costume would look like though I am sure none of the men would like to wear it.
I’m curious about how those headpieces are constructed. There’s a definite band that encircles the head. There’s a tiny bow of sorts at the top in the center. The flying white scarves really look like large, starched, dinner napkins, but I know they are not! I would love to see one up close and in person!
Me too. I’ve often wondered if the cotton is wired. You’d think that after being out and about on a windy day, those flying wings would start to wilt but they don’t. I think wiring inside might be the secret.
My mother had one of these. It’s just a (really well!) starched cotton kerchief folded around a firm round band that encircles the head.

Couldn’t help but wonder – is there not a traditional men’s costume?
There is: Silver-buckeled shoes, knee breeches, embroidered vest and short jacket with gold or silver buttons. To my knowledge the Danish prince Henrik is the only of the royal men, who has the moxie to carry the traditional costume in public. Good for him.
Crown Prince Haakon also does very well!
