Royal Ascot 2017 Day 1: Earl & Countess Snowdon

Royal Ascot | Royal Hats Late released photos of the first day of the races show that the Earl and Countess of Snowdon were also in attendance. Serena looked to be wearing a picture hat of sorts with rounded, very tall hat (there looks to be some sort of diagonal fold or overlay on the crown) and cartwheel brim. David repeated his black silk to hat.

  1. Serena’s usually so reliable but this is … so ordinary. Did she decided to attend at the last minute or something? There’s not many explanations I can think of for this, or her expression. Hopefully, she’ll come right over the next few days.

  2. Maybe it’s Serena’s long-suffering expression, but the hat seems to me to emit a droopy vibe apart from its actual shape.

  3. Ditto, everyone else about Serena’s outfit. But, HQ, did you sleep last night? Every time I check the blog I find 2-3 more posts. This is truly hat heaven week! Thank you for sharing every Royal’s hat you can find with us plus a few more!!! Love, love, love!

  4. Serena looks as happy about her outfit as I am (not at all)! She usually looks so good that this is very surprising. Hope she shows up another day and does better.

  5. David’s top hat is absolutely superb! His overall looks is great (love the tie color), but does he realize he got the buttons wrong on his waistcoat?

Unfortunately Serena does not look as well put-together. I like her dress and belt, but the hat doesn’t work. It sits at a weird angle, and I suspect that’s because the crown looks too small for her. I think a cocktail hat in the same burnt orange as her belt would’ve been a much better choice.

  6. I get a real “insouciant aristocrat” vibe from this. I like the dress and hat, but there’s not enough communication between the hat, belt, and shoes, and Royal Ascot seems to warrant a bit more in the jewel department, especially when one’s hat is so simple.

  7. I prefer Serena in a more retro look. She always looks great in a nod to the 60’s. This is not one of her best efforts.

  8. I’m distinctly underwhelmed – the hat looks far too lightweight against the heavy print. Why does she dress so much older than her years?
