King Willem-Alexander Queen Máxima attended a remembrance ceremony yesterday in Vijfhuizen to unveil a memorial for the 298 victims of the July 17, 2014 MH17. For this event, Máxima repeated her black straw hat with sharply upswept ‘slice brim’ and Petersham ribbon hatband with flat bow at the back. Máxima has several black hats in her wardrobe in simpler shapes with very restrained trim, clearly for occasions such as these. It’s a great hat on her that was well suited to this memorial event.

Lovely and very appropriate ensemble… love the Pearls!!
She looks wonderful, very elegant. I have to agree the pearls look fantastic. A classic look that never goes out of style.
I would rather se the brim at the front have a curve to the upward slant….not so harsh an angle, looks so odd to me. Her pearls are lucious and fantastic.
Happy to see that this great hat was not damaged by the rain at the previous wearing. You can see by the facial expressions on both King and Queen what an emotional event this was for them — it must be very difficult to worry about choosing just the right dress, hat and jewels while also contemplating such a tragic loss of life!
I am so glad someone else feels as I do that the emotion of the day shows on their faces. I read on another blog that the Queen looks like she is about to burst out laughing. I strongly disagree with this. They are both appropriate dressed and appropriately behaved for a very difficult situation. And the hat is fabulous too.

I wish she would use this type of look more often and not just for memorials — less is more is not a lesson Max seems to follow – but today’s outfit clearly shows she can do it when she feels the occasion calls for it. Bravo on this day’s look.
A simple, elegant, and effective look for this outing. Looks like she was able to keep cool on what looks like a warmer day, despite wearing all that black. I’m glad to see this hat make another appearance.
Love this look on Queen Máxima. I like the fact this is a stylish hat while at the same time appropriate for the setting and event. That said, I LOVE the pearls!!! The strand of pearls and earrings are everything!
We don’t talk enough about the pairing of hats with jewels- a challenge unique to royals I think! We can laugh about the dilemma of hats detracting from diamonds (!) but balancing accessories in royal dressing is a real art- we certainly notice when they are not! I agree, the mix of pearls, hat and silk dress here is really lovely.
