‘New’ Hat From the Past #2

Royal Hats to August 8, 1997 and a white straw tall-crowned boater hat with pleated blue hatband worn on a visit to The Isle Of Arran. It’s a rather classic piece (save the back bow) I’m surprised not to have seen before.

  1. Here’s an amusing photo of this hat (taken on May 18, 1997)

  3. Wow, you know it ‘s the nineties when you see a crown of this height.
I’m going to be the outlier and say that much as I adore boaters, this particular one needs a revamp. I think the crown height needs to be reduced to just above the top of the band for a more flattering proportion, and to be worn with a different suit (the hatband colour is too saturated to work with the suit fabric). The wardrobe team seem to have tried to match the blue of the threads in the suit exactly – which never works when the fabric is multicoloured and heavily textured – the fabric always ends up looking duller or washed out.
But the brim is really really nice on HM, and a different outfit would make a ton of difference. Time for remodelling!

  4. Taken May 18, 1997. What’s under the hat, HQ? I really like this ensemble.

  5. Yes! I agree with everyone so far: a very nice shape, size, color, hat band. Nothing wrong with this; it’s something that might always be in style.

  6. I really like this one. Proportions are good, color is good – perfect for summer. The Queen looks lovely in it. I also like her suit instead of her usual coat and dress. This makes 2 that I don’t recall ever seeing. This is fun.

  7. Wow, Cool find HQ. I love this hat. Love the size and shape of the crown particularly the height. The size of the pleating and band overall sets the crown off beautifully. The brim’s shape and size compliment the hat and The Queen too. Blue and white such a nice, crisp look. Not sure about the bow but not particularly bothered about it either from what we can see. I am really enjoying all of these fabulous posts. You a star.
