‘New’ Hat From the Past #10

Royal Hats to June 1988 and a blue straw hat with floral trim that Queen Elizabeth wore for Trooping the Colour. The shape and styling of this hat seems so contemporary from the angle it’s seen here that it is hard to believe it was worn nearly 30 years ago.

    • I tried to locate a photo of the queen from the right–I don’t think one exists! All determinedly from the left or straight on. (Many of the Princess of Wales hat from every direction, and then some!)

      • I found a photo showing the right side of the hat in the ITN book “The Royal Year 1988” and scanned it and uploaded it to Pinterest — you can see it here: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/249457266843079261/. Unfortunately, since the flower is the same color as the rest of the hat, you can’t make out that much detail, but at least you can see it. I like the hat, but wish there might have been at least a touch of white or some other contrasting color in the embellishment to make it stand out a bit more.

I also find myself focusing on the odd positioning of HM’s brooch. She sometimes wears them on the collar and sometimes on the body of a coat, here it looks like she couldn’t quite decide!

Incidentally, HatQueen, there are some wonderful photos in this book of the Duchess of York wearing hats — even though she’s not a member of the Royal Family anymore, she was then — you might enjoy looking back at some of these at some point.

  1. Yes! So contemporary looking! I wish HM would wear this shape more often, and even this hat/coat! If she pulled it out today I would only think yay!

  2. Nice hat. This is one that could have been worn down just a bit in front. That would have shown the flowers to better advantage.

  3. Nice hat, but I’m totally distracted by that cheeky little Harry in front of her! A right side shot of HM would be nice.

  4. I think if I were to be awoken suddenly, and asked to “draw a picture of the Queen” this might be the vintage H.M. I would attempt to draw. It’s the look I have come to think of as My Queen, and this blue colour is particularly suited to her. Again, I am enjoying seeing the non-Kelly hats. I like the variety.
