to July 22, 1999 and a visit to Liverpool that saw the Queen in a pale, sage green straw hat with a wide, cartwheel brim and tall crown, wrapped in pleated an ruched straw. There’s also a pink and green cord of some sort dotted through that crown wrap, tying the hat Queen Elizabeth’s green printed dress. It’s an interesting piece I can’t recall seeing before.

I really like everything about this hat except the way they handled the wrap on the left side.
Agree entirely.
I agree with Jimbo on the hat in the portrait. (The portrait presentation put me in mind of the one she was given on her most recent visit to France that The Queen apparently did not care for!)
Watched a DVD the other night about the gardens at Highgrove – Prince Charles has found homes in a specially trimmed hedge for the several busts of himself that he’s been presented. I wonder why gift givers think the royals would like a representation of themselves?
Yes, that is pretty strange!
HM Thr Queen wore this outfit under her raincoat for the 2001 Queen’s Birthday Parade. It became one of the wettest in history.
Nice side shot.
Here’s a view of the Birthday Parade wearing, though the hat is pretty well obscured under the umbrella — interesting how the raincoat is so capelike, revealing both the sleeve of her regular coat and the sleeve of the dress beneath.
I think I like the hat in the painting better!

That’s actually quite a nice hat, Jimbo (the 1999 Ascot hat), and another that I have no memory of!
Aha! I wondered who would find a photo of the hat in the painting! Both of these hats are nice enough, but they do very much reflect the late 90s/early 2000s millinery styles, which admittedly were not my favorite, but were improvements over much of the previous 2-3 decades.
I like this one!
